Trump calls British ambassador to US 'a very stupid guy'

U.S. President Donald Trump took aim at British Prime Minister Theresa May and her Washington ambassador on Tuesday, two days after leaked documents showed criticism of his administration.

The journalist who reported the leak, Isabel Oakeshott, is a strong Brexit backer and an ally of Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, who also is Britain's leading champion of Mr Trump.

When anchor Cathy Newman asked whether the diplomat was just giving an "unvarnished" report to the government, Mr Tice responded: "He accused the President of the United States of being indebted to "dodgy Russians".

President Trump writes on Twitter that he doesn't know Ambassador Kim Darroch but was told that he is a, quote, "pompous fool" and a "very stupid guy".

"I told her how to do that deal, but she went her own foolish way - was unable to get it done".

In his tweets on Monday, Trump said of Darroch: "I do not know the ambassador, but he is not liked or well thought of within the US".

Britain said it would apologize directly to Trump and his daughter and White House adviser Ivanka Trump over the leaked memos.

Downing Street said Sir Kim remained in post after Mr Trump warned on Monday the White House would have nothing more to do with him. State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus says officials there will deal with all accredited diplomats until it hears otherwise from the White House.

Kristofferson was actually third down on the all-day bill, separated from the headliner by a set from Bryan Ferry. She won an Oscar for best original song - alongside Paul Williams - for the love song " Evergreen " in the film.

Meanwhile, International Trade Secretary Liam Fox's scheduled meeting with the US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in the US was cancelled on Tuesday.

A former British ambassador to the USA and a close friend of Kim said there was a "possible range of villains" who potentially could have made the leak. He was telling London that Trump is an erratic US President with his own nationalist agenda, and he was warning his bosses to tread with extreme care. "The UK has a special and enduring relationship with the United States based on our long history and commitment to shared values and that will continue to be the case", he said.

Britain's Foreign and Commonwealth Office did not dispute the veracity of the memos, while the British government has launched an inquiry to investigate the leak of sensitive memos, covering a period beginning in 2017.

Johnson, the forerunner to succeed Theresa May, then said Trump had been dragged into a "British political debate".

Both Johnson and Hunt have indicated they could support leaving the bloc without a deal, making a future agreement with the United States even more important. "I think there is a chance to do things differently, a chance to break away from the failed old can-kicking approaching".

Tory former foreign secretary Lord Hague told the BBC: "You can't change an ambassador at the demand of a host country".

President Trump first struck back on Sunday, telling reporters that Ambassador Darroch "has not served the United Kingdom well".

Sir Christopher said there was a "range of possible villains" who might have been responsible for passing his dispatches to the press.
