Yemen has been beset by violence and chaos since 2014, when Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including the capital, Sanaa. "We are part of the coalition", the official said, adding that the drawdown was discussed extensively with the Saudis.

Al-Humaidi said his rights group has documented "serious violations" during the trial of the defendants.

The diplomats said Abu Dhabi preferred to have its forces and equipment on hand should tension between the United States and Iran escalate further after attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf and Tehran's downing of a U.S. unmanned drone.

"We're very, very protected when it comes to drones".

Yemeni women receive food aid in the coastal city of Hodeidah on June 14, 2018. Over 6,000 children have either been killed or sustained serious injuries since 2015, United Nations children's agency said.

The official confirmed that UAE troop levels are down, describing it as a "strategic redeployment".

As part of growing tensions between Iran and the U.S. and its allies, Iran has been accused of being behind the acts of sabotage on foreign oil tankers, including those from Saudi Arabia, off the Emirati port of Fujairah.
