Wolff, Morikawa in spot for first career PGA win at 3M Open

3M Open Bryson De Chambeau fires career-low 62 to grab lead into weekend

Matthew Wolff joined elite company with his first PGA Tour win at the 3M Open on Sunday.

Wolff, a 20-year-old Oklahoma State product who won the USA college title in May, birdied six consecutive holes at one stretch to become the youngest 54-hole PGA co-leader since 1983.

Wolff - whose unusual swing has drawn plenty of attention - joined 15-time major champion Tiger Woods and two-time major victor Ben Crenshaw in that club, according to the PGA Tour.

Still, not even Wolff could've written a better script to secure the first win of his PGA Tour career, and maybe more importantly, his PGA Tour card.

Matthew Wolff, a 20-year-old making his third career PGA Tour start on a sponsor's exemption this week at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, shot a final round 6-under 65 on Sunday to win the inaugural 3M Open at 21 under total.

Wolff entered the final hole trailing Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa by a single stroke but was able to reach the edge of the green in two strokes on the par 5 18th hole.

Canadian Adam Hadwin shot 67 to claim fourth at 18 under with Mexico's Carlos Ortiz (64) and Wyndham Clark (68) a stroke back.

"It's going to be hard", Wolff said. DeChambeau equalled the suburban Los Angeles products by shooting 70, opening and closing with birdies against a bogey when he missed the green at the par-3 13th.

Dodgers, Padres play through huge quake in Los Angeles
Alex Verdugo doubled and scored when Padres third baseman Manny Machado uncorked a wild throw after a Justin Turner ground ball. The Dodgers went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight when their four-game winning streak was snapped.

Wolff shared 50th at the Phoenix Open in February as an amateur, 80th at last month Travelers Championship in his PGA pro debut and missed the cut last week in Detroit.

"I've changed forever, I guess", he said. "If I can stay like that tomorrow it should be pretty exciting". This week I just believed in myself.

On the par-5 hole, Wolff set himself up for an eagle putt.

The 20-year-old could have been the solo leader but a birdie on the par-three 17th hole moved him back to 15 under, alongside DeChambeau and Morikawa.

But it was level pegging again after 13 holes as Wolff birdied the 10th, DeChambeau the 10th and 13th and Morikawa the 11th, 12th and 13th.

DeChambeau, who was in third place on the 18th hole, hit a major eagle put to take the lead.

After his lone bogey at 15, Morikawa birdied the par-3 17th from three feet and parred 18. He did just that by tapping in for birdie at the 18th, tying DeChambeau for second as both golfers shot 66. "This is something that I've always dreamed of as a kid growing up".
