Daimler AG und BMW Group start long-term cooperation for automated driving

It not only covers all relevant safety methods for Level 3/4 SAE automated driving, but also introduces a traceability system, which extends from the primary goal - being safer than the average driver - right down to the individual safety objectives of the various components. But in certain conditions or domains human would be allowed to take control of steering wheel and brakes, if they are present int he vehicle.

Thus, about 1,200 technicians from both companies will collaborate to develop the new technology. It also contains advanced driver assistance features like smart cruise control and automated parking.

Separate research in this field has been conducted by both companies until now.

BMW further explains that the objective of the paper is to create a situation where an autonomously-driven vehicle is proven to be safer than one involving full human control.

Other participants in the document included Audi, Baidu, Continental, Fiat Chrysler, Here Technologies, Infineon, Intel, Volkswagen and Aptiv.

Even though it's not officially part of the deal, the two carmakers have also voiced that they are looking to expand their cooperation to include automated driving in denser urban areas, and for city driving conditions.

United States says latest Taliban talks 'most productive' so far
But Washington has made it clear the Taliban must talk with the Afghan government if they wish to seal a peace deal. Suhail Shaheen, a spokesman for the Taliban's office in Qatar, said they were also pleased with the discussions.

A key aim of the cooperation is the swift market launch of the technology, which is expected to feature in passenger auto systems for private customers from 2024.

The self-driving space has certainly drawn tremendous participation from established and new players alike, owing to a widespread conviction with regards to the potential of automated driving systems.

There is no denying that autonomous vehicles will become more and more common in the near future and automakers are competing to come out with more advanced tech but instead of fighting with each other, BMW and Daimler has now chose to work together.

They added that the results won't be kept secret and other firms can see the conclusions "under license".

BMW and Daimler said they had finalised the agreement and expected the technology to be deployed in mass market vehicles from 2024. BMW's next big automated driving push will be alongside its iNEXT lines of vehicles, with Level 3 technologies targeted release along with the first of those models in 2021.

The BMW Group and Daimler AG are teaming to jointly develop self-driving technologies.
