After months of upheaval, Sudan celebrates power-sharing deal

Ruling generals and opposition leaders met Wednesday for the first time in weeks

Sudan's army ruler General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan vowed Saturday to protect and implement the power-sharing deal agreed with protesters that aims to end the country's months-long political crisis.

Talks collapsed when security forces razed a protest camp outside the military headquarters in Khartoum on June 3 leaving more than a hundred killed, according to protesters.

Dozens were killed, triggering global outrage, although the generals insisted they did not order the violent dispersal of protesters.

The latest round of talks came through after intense mediation by Ethiopia and African Union between the two rival groups.

The governing body will have a total of six civilians and five military representatives. It will comprise five military members and five civilian appointees, with an additional civilian member agreed by the two sides, and the deal will be finalised by Monday, the SPA said.

Civilians, however, have been protesting since the coup, demanding civilians have a role in governing the country, not only the military.

The raid was carried out by men in military fatigues. It was the military that waged multiple civil wars, perpetrating numerous atrocities- most notably in Darfur- before and since.

"We'll continue to press ... for what happened to the victims", he emphasized, adding that will be a key point of demand on the transition government.

Bashir was forced out in April, and is in jail charged with corruption, but the transitional military council, which seized power after Bashir's ousting, was unable to stop the demonstrations. "We do understand that they were facing a dangerously unpredictable political situation and a deceitful military council", Babiker said. "This risks becoming the new impasse", said Boswell.

The U.N. chief expressed his solidarity with the people of Sudan, and reiterated the commitment of the United Nations to assist in the transition process. And it is the military which maintains power, and has demonstrated the willingness to maintain it by force.

"This agreement opens the way for the formation of the institutions of the transitional authority, and we hope that this is the beginning of a new era", said Omar al-Degair, a leader of the FFC.

An independent investigation into the killings was also announced, and anyone found guilty will not be allowed to sit on the sovereign council.

"The other choice would have been to take the path of confrontation".

For weeks this issue has rocked Sudan, extending the political crisis triggered since the fall of Bashir.

"This is one of the major challenges".
