Auger-Aliassime powers past Tsitsipas into Queen's semis

Feliciano Lopez of Spain reacts after scoring a point against Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada during their men's singles semifinal match at the Queens Club tennis tournament in London, Saturday, June 22, 2019.

After defeating world No. 6 Tsitsipas 7-5 6-2 he became the youngest player since Hewitt in 1999 to break into the top-25 and earned incredible praise from the Greek young gun, who made his own daring run to the semis of the Australian Open this year.

Auger-Aliassime skipped last year's ATP grass season to play in Challenger Tour events on clay.

Stefanos Tsitsipas waxed lyrical over Felix Auger-Aliassime after the sensation knocked him out of the Queen's Club Championships, describing the teenager as the most hard opponent he has faced.

The 113th-ranked Lopez, 37, won Queen's Club in 2017. I will not be surprised if he gets wins over those guys.

But he dropped serve for the first time in 44 service games when he hit a forehand long in the next game and for the first time all week his focussed slipped.

Auger-Aliassime repelled them both and claimed the tie break 7-3 with a forehand victor, moving a set away from the title match.

Well there was nothing between them for the first hour of the match, with just a couple of break chances on either side saved by great serving.

All such reports were rubbed away when a feud between the Lakers legend LeBron James and Kyrie Irving came to public. Irving then signed with Roc Nation Sports, Jay-Z's sports management company.

The Canadian may have been seeded lower, but he owns a flawless record against Tsitsipas with three victories as a junior and now two on the ATP Tour.

Auger-Aliassime was the youngest semi-finalist at Queen's since Lleyton Hewitt, also 18, in 1999. Lopez advanced to the semifinals by edging Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., on Friday. The Canadian won 101 points, while Lopez took 99.

After reaching the finals in Stuttgart at the Mercedes Cup last week and now beating Grigor Dimitrov and Nick Kyrgios in the same day, few would blame Felix Auger-Aliassime from getting carried away, but he seems to have his feet planted firmly on the green turf if this recent interview is anything to go by.

The 19-year age differential between Lopez (37) and Auger-Aliassime will be the greatest in an ATP Tour semifinal or final since the 43-year-old Ken Rosewall defeated 23-year-old American Pat Dupre to reach the Hong Kong Grand Prix final in 1977.

The three-time grand slam champion and Feliciano Lopez took the title in London on Sunday just five months after the Brit underwent hip resurfacing surgery.

In other Fever-Tree Championships quarterfinal action, Daniil Medvedev became the first Russian to reach the semifinals of Queen's Club in the Open Era when he beat Diego Schwartzman 6-2, 6-2.

The victor of Auger-Aliassime and de Minaur vs. Ken Skupski and Dan Evans would have to play another doubles match late in the day against Lopez and Andy Murray. They were to play the doubles semifinal later Saturday.
