Trump Slams 'Loser' John Dean After Nixon Comparison

U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler D-NY Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee speaks during a news conference in New York Wednesday

Just prior to Monday's hearing, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler of NY announced that the Justice Department had agreed to provide the committee with some of the Mueller probe documents it had requested.

The Justice Department will continue to cooperate with the committee, under their agreement, as long as Democrats hold off on the contempt vote, Justice spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said.

"I did make the point that when I worked at that committee many years ago, they actually accomplished things because the Republicans crossed the aisle ... we accomplished things like amending the '64 civil rights act, the voting rights act of '65, the 18-year-old vote and the 25th Amendment", Dean said.

Nadler's committee and others in the House are pursuing several investigations of Trump, along with the obstruction allegations, including about his business affairs, taxes and administration policies during his 29-month presidency. Criminal contempt would be referred to the justice department, where it would certainly be rejected. According to a redacted version of the report, which was released in April, Mueller found that although Trump's campaign had multiple contacts with Russian officials, there was insufficient evidence to establish criminal conspiracy.

The House Judiciary Committee will be able to review some of the underlying evidence from the Mueller report.

Today's hearing, convened by Nadler, is billed as: "Lessons from the Mueller Report: Presidential Obstruction and Other Crimes".

About a quarter of the 235 Democrats in the 435-member House, along with one Republican, have called for Trump's impeachment or the start of an impeachment inquiry. When Mr. Nadler said he believed Mr. Jordan had done so, Mr. Jordan fired back, "You're wrong", but the chairman cut him off, banging his gavel.

The goal - as Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern, D-Mass., said in a hearing of his panel on Monday - is for the House to both investigate and keep its calendar clear enough to legislate: "to walk and chew gum at the same time", McGovern said.

Dean, a CNN commentator and outspoken Trump critic, said he wanted to provide a historical context to the Mueller investigation.

The hearing featured testimony from former White House Counsel John Dean, who famously testified against former President Richard Nixon during the Watergate hearings.

But two-thirds of voters said the Mueller report did not completely exonerate Trump from wrongdoing compared to 25 percent of respondents who said it did.

"Special Counsel Mueller has provided this committee with a roadmap".

Appearing on CNN, Dean said he would draw comparisons in his testimony between actions documented in the Mueller report and the Watergate scandal.

"He left", Trump told reporters at the White House.

"While 61 percent of Democrats say there should be an impeachment investigation, 83 percent of Republicans and 52 percent of independents say it's time to move on", said Siena pollster Steven Greenberg.

That remark emboldened Democrats who would like to see impeachment proceedings launched, despite a determination by Attorney General William Barr that Trump's actions did not warrant obstruction charges.
