Trump says USA reaches agreement with Mexico to avert tariffs

Central American migrants cross the border between Ciudad Juarez Chihuahua State Mexico and El Paso Texas before being detained by US Customs and Border Patrol agents in May 2019

"The tariffs scheduled to be implemented by the United States on Monday, against Mexico, are hereby indefinitely suspended", Trump wrote on Twitter shortly after returning from a trip to Europe. He cited Mexico's commitment to "strong measures" intended "to greatly reduce, or eliminate" illegal immigration from Mexico.

The document said that Mexico will also take "decisive action" to dismantle smuggling and trafficking operations, while both countries will increase cooperation to protect the border.

Mexico's president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said on Twitter that "Thanks to the support of all Mexicans, the imposition of tariffs on Mexican products exported to the U.S. has been avoided".

U.S. President Donald Trump, who has continually railed against illegal immigration as a candidate and since taking office, had threatened to impose 5% import tariffs on all Mexican goods from Monday if Mexico did not do more to tighten its borders.

However, he faced difficulties in moving forward with tariffs against Mexico.

Trump's trade wars with Mexico and other countries appear to have spooked American companies into putting the brakes on hiring, as they added just 75,000 jobs in May, far fewer than the 180,000 economists expected, the Labor Department reported Friday.

Leaving the State Department Friday night, Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said he thought the deal struck "a fair balance" because the U.S. "had more drastic proposals and measures at the start". The talks took place at the State Department, beginning around 7 am and not ending until late in the evenings. "I'm optimistic we can achieve that".

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin hailed the deal between the U.S. and Mexico as "very, very significant".

"The others have to find a way to stabilise the multilateral rules-based system", he said, "even if the U.S. want to kill it".

Real Madrid Announce Eden Hazard Signing
Real Madrid finished third in the Spanish league and was eliminated early in the Champions League and the Copa del Rey. Hazard sealed his dream move on Friday, signing a five-year deal at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu .

The announcement was made in a message Trump posted on Twitter.

Mexico pledged in a joint statement to take "unprecedented steps to increase enforcement to curb irregular migration".

Earlier this week Ebrard said that was a request Mexico could not accept.

Trump tweeted on Saturday that the deal includes Mexico sending 6,000 troops to its southern border, saying that now "there are few!"

The agreement also allows the U.S.to install its Migrant Protection Protocols across the southern border, a policy that requires asylum seekers to wait for their claims to be processed in Mexico rather than in the U.S. The policy will mean that anyone caught entering the U.S. illegally will be obtained by border agents and returned to Mexico.

The program was challenged in court earlier this year by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other rights groups which say it puts asylum seekers in danger and violates USA and worldwide law.

In recent months the migrant groups have been dominated by families with children. Trump boasted in a Saturday tweet.

"We wish that members of Congress would spend as much time looking to fix the problem legislatively as they do bellyaching about what the President is doing trying to fix the problem", Short said when asked about Republican opposition to his tariffs.

"Mexico must step up and help solve this problem".
