The Memorial: Woods saves best round for last

Martin Kaymer

The former UCLA Bruin entered the PGA Tour as one of the most decorated amateurs of this century.

"I was cruising and made that bogey on 15", said the Northern Irishman, who had another bogey at the 17th before collecting a birdie at the last to fall just short. "It's disappointing not to win, for sure".

"I was hoping I could get something positive going into the Open, and I was able to accomplish that, which is great, and get some nice positive momentum going into a nice practice week, " Woods said.

"I was looking for a little redemption this week", Cantlay said.

And so, for the aforementioned three, their win droughts continue. The US Masters victor put his missed cut at Bethpage Black with an eye-catching performance at Memorial and there were times throughout the week, and yesterday in particular when it looked like the old Tiger Woods was back and here to stay.

Cantlay finished at 19 under, and 54-hole leader Martin Kaymer was third two strokes further behind.

Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka are the only two players trading in single-figures for the US Open but that could all change after this week's PGA Tour event - the Canadian Open. He matched his worst score at Muirfield Village with a 79 and missed the cut.

He indicated on Saturday that 18-time major champion Nicklaus had given him some advice on how to close out tournaments. "I just didn't believe that I could win the tournament I'm playing".

Trump 'deadly serious' about Mexico tariff threat, White House aide says
President Trump blames Democrats for "doing nothing" when it comes to border security. Scott Morrison played down suggestions of a trade spat with the United States.

"Once you're through the cut line, then you've got to build your way into the tournament".

Cantlay was bogey-free in his final round and fired off eight birdies to capture his second PGA Tour title.

Cantlay was the only player who looked capable of chasing him and played like he had to. Then, he was out of dinner one night with his best friend and caddie, Chris Roth, when Roth was stuck by a vehicle and killed.

"After the difficulties with my friend Chris dying and being out so long with my back, I'm definitely a different person than I was before I went through any of those troubles", Cantlay said.

On a day that saw England's Justin Rose charge up the leaderboard with a spectacular nine-under par 63, Tiger Woods was spinning his wheels with an even par 72 that was marred by an ugly double bogey at the par-five 15th.

"Adam played a good round of golf".

Woods flirted with the course record of 61 early on, but had some stumbles on the back nine before turning his eyes westward toward Pebble Beach Golf Links and the U.S. Open, which begins a week from Thursday. "I just need to play the game". The 43-year-old Woods, a five-time victor at Memorial, could equal Snead's record of 82 PGA Tour wins with a victory this week at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.
