Sudan army ruler says talks over civil rule suspended for 72 hours

Sudanese protesters burn tyres as they block

"We have made a decision to suspend the negotiation for 72 hours until a climate is prepared for the talks", said TMC Chairman Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan in a statement broadcast live by official Sudan TV early Thursday.

Sudan's Transitional Military Council (TMC) on Thursday announced suspension of talks with the major opposition forces for 72 hours.

He demanded that protesters dismantle roadblocks in Khartoum, open bridges and railway lines connecting the capital and "stop provoking security forces".

Sudan's opposition alliance blamed military rulers on Tuesday for renewed street violence complicating efforts to negotiate a handover to civilian power after last month's ouster of President Omar al-Bashir.

Sudan's opposition alliance has described the suspension of talks with protesters by the ruling military council as a "regrettable decision".

Tensions soared after Monday's shootings, which came a day after protesters blocked a key avenue in Khartoum, an action which the generals said was "totally unacceptable".

After the military ousted al-Bashir and took over the country, the protesters remained on the streets, demanding that the ruling generals hand over power to civilians right away.

After Wednesday's incidents, a key group in the protest movement urged people to join the thousands of demonstrators at the site, some of whom have camped out round-the-clock for weeks.

The two sides announced early Wednesday that they had reached an agreement on the transition period.

During the first two days of talks, the two sides had agreed on an overall civilian structure, including a three-year transitional period for the full transfer of power to a civilian administration.

"People were walking towards the barricades and they (security forces) were firing shots at them", a 20-year-old demonstrator, who asked not to be named, said, showing a handful of empty bullet casings and referring to roadblocks set up by protesters.

On Wednesday the two sides were to finalise the composition of the new sovereign council which has been the toughest part of the negotiations.

General Yasser Al Atta, one of the members of the current ruling military council, had vowed earlier this week to reach a deal by Thursday that "meets the people's aspirations".

Both the protesters and the transitional military council say the violence was instigated by al-Bashir loyalists from within the security forces.

The opposition and military were meeting again on Tuesday to discuss two sticking points: the military-civilian balance of power in transitional bodies and the timeframe for elections.

"The tragic attacks on protesters. were clearly the result of the Transitional Military Council trying to impose its will on the protesters by attempting to remove roadblocks", the United States embassy said in a statement.
