Judge Orders Former Soldier and WikiLeaks Source Manning Back to Jail

Chelsea Manning will go back to jail after refusing to testify to grand jury probing Wikileaks

United States Marshals took Manning back into custody at the U.S. District Courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia, Thursday afternoon after she refused to cooperate, yet again, with a subpoena to testify before another secret federal grand jury.

Former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning says she'll stay in jail "forever" rather than testify to a grand jury investigating Wikileaks.

"I've already been to prison, so attempting to coerce me with a grand jury subpoena is just not going to work ..."

She told the judge she'd "rather starve to death" than comply with the subpoena. He also imposed a fine of $500 per day if Manning does not testify within 30 days, and raised the fine to $1,000 per day if she does not testify within 60 days.

During the hearing, US District Judge Anthony Trenga said it was "unfortunate we're at this point", but that, despite Manning's pleadings otherwise, he believed further jail time might still prove coercive.

Assange is now serving a 50-week British prison sentence for jumping bail.

Manning's attorney, Moira Meltzer-Cohen, addressed the media after Manning was returned to jail, expressing her disappointment and reiterating that her client would not betray her convictions by testifying. When Manning left jail, she was greeted with a new subpoena to appear on May 16.

Derby Players Remind Leeds Of Spygate With Brilliant Celebration
And after the win, Derby's players mocked Leeds spying on them by making binocular signs to their celebrating fans at Elland Road. I'm not going to lie maybe it is.

Manning served two months at William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center in Alexandria, Va. for a contempt charge regarding the same issue, but was released on Friday after the grand jury term expired.

After a conviction for espionage in 2013, Manning was imprisoned but released in 2017 when former President Barack Obama shortened his sentence.

The questions asked by the previous panel were very "broad and generic", the same things asked at the court-martial, Manning told reporters, speculating that the government is trying to "re-litigate" that trial because it did not like the outcome.

But her freedom was short-lived. There's no new information they are trying to get from me.

"In 2010 Chelsea made a principled decision to let the world see the true nature modern asymmetric warfare", Meltzer-Cohen continued.

"The American government relies on the informed consent of the governed, and the free press is the vigorous mechanism to keep us informed". Grand juries and prosecutions like this one broadcast an expanding threat to the press and function to undermine the integrity of the system according to the government's own laws. "This administration is also obsessed with unwinding [US President Barack] Obama's legacy, from healthcare to Chelsea's commutation".

"This is unprecedented", read a tweet from Manning's official Twitter account. "It is up to the press to stand up for themselves, to stand up for the practice of journalism, and to stand up for Chelsea in the way that she has consistently stood up for them".
