USA records 695 measles cases, most since elimination in 2000

Mother Wenyi Zhang holds 1-year-old Abel Zhang moments after he received a vaccine for measles mumps and rubella, at the International Community Health Services Wednesday Feb. 13 2019 in Seattle

"The outbreaks in New York City and New York State are among the largest and longest lasting since measles elimination in 2000".

Historically, measles case counts were vastly higher before vaccination began in 1963.

Residents can call the Orleans and Jefferson Health Units at 504-658-2540 for more information on how and where to get vaccinated.

"Measles is the signal that in these communities where there's profound under-vaccination, they are susceptible to a whole menu of communicable diseases we thought were relegated to yesteryear", he said.

"Measles-a respiratory disease that causes a skin rash, fever, cough, and runny nose-can be unsafe, especially for babies and young children".

"We are fighting a disease now in 2019 that should have been off the table in the 1960s with the development of the vaccine", he said.

The spread of measles and its resurgence has touched a new record in the USA, years after the government officially declared it eradicated from the country. And infected people are contagious for up to four days before the telltale rash develops-meaning they can transmit the disease long before they know they have it.

It's the gas station at 200 Browns Ferry Road that Tennessee Department of Health officials said Wednesday that an East Tennessee person with measles visited on April 11th.

It's not that measles has been eliminated in the United States, it's that the memory of measles has been eliminated, he explained.

Measles kills about 1 in 1,000 who get it, he said.

The World Health Organization noted a 300 percent increase in measles cases worldwide earlier this month in comparison to the first three months of 2018. That's why Americans aren't seeing widespread cases of measles.

Although the "scientific" study which raised concerns about a possible link between the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism has been thoroughly debunked and retracted, the myth persists in some circles. In fact, vaccines are overwhelmingly safe. If parents have concerns about the vaccine, they should talk with their pediatrician, Patel said.

This comes as the nation is experiencing its highest rates of measles cases since the disease was eliminated from the United States in 2000.

But "vaccines are victims of their own success", Offit said, because now "people don't fear these diseases".

The CDC recommends the vaccine for everyone over a year old, except for people who had the disease as children.

It is one of the most contagious diseases and can cause severe complications, including pneumonia, swelling of the brain and death.

In 1911, Clemens von Pirquet, the first professor and chair of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins, discovered that a child's immune system is suppressed after contracting measles. "Vaccines provide that safety".
