Fordham student injured in fall from bell tower

Fordham University bell tower

"I heard they were just getting a better view of the city", a senior told the New York Post.

Monfries lost her footing and fell about 30 or 40 feet, officials said.

The circumstances of her fall were not immediately available, police said.

Police say she was with a group of students early Sunday morning who chose to climb a bell tower to get a view of the city skyline.

"Our hearts go out to Sydney's parents, and her family and friends".

Sydney Paige Monfries, who was studying journalism at New York's Fordham University, was killed after the horrific accident which occurred about 3am on Sunday morning.

University president Joseph M McShane told NBC New York Ms Monfries would be awarded her degree posthumously.

But Sydney Monfries plunged through a hole in a stairway landing inside the tower, which is off-limits to students, at 3 a.m. Sunday, WNBC reported.

Another student, Anne, told the New York Post: "I think they were posting on Instagram when it happened".

Lenders discussing ways to revive Jet Airways; fund infusion likely soon
A senior official at DGCA said that ticket prices on high-density routes have risen up to 30 per cent in last one month. On Monday, lenders did not take a final decision on providing emergency funds to the cash-strapped carrier.

She is being treated at a nearby hospital, according to the report.

Administrators from the university confirmed Monfries' death in a post on social media, directing students to grief counseling resources.

The school said it was investigating how the students gained access to the tower.

Her family rushed to her side, along with two priests, one from the Catholic university, however she sadly died on Sunday evening.

In a statement to INSIDER, a spokesperson for Fordham said there have been "no other falls in or from Keating Tower".

"It's like a tradition, apparently, for seniors to sneak into the tower and climb up", student Antonia Greene said, CBS reported.

One student, who remained anonymous out of concern of repercussion, reportedly climbed the tower, The Fordham Ram reported in March 2013.

Founded in 1841, Fordham University is a Jesuit university in the Bronx with 9,600 undergraduates and 6,500 graduate students, according to its website.

School officials said Keating Hall and the door to its clock tower are always locked and only accessible by authorized staff members, and this was the first time anyone had fallen from the structure.
