Jet Airways pilots protest as airline grounds all worldwide flights

Jet Airways' employees protest outside Delhi airport over delay in payment

Jet Airways aircrafts are seen parked at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, Monday, April 15, 2019.

One pilot told the BBC: "We haven't been paid for the last four months".

Right now, only 7 aircraft are being used by Jet for domestic routes, rest all flights have been canceled.

"The appeal is to the prime minister to save Jet Airways, to save 20,000-plus jobs which are at stake here, to pay our salaries", said Jet Airways captain Asim Valiani.

The official said that the airline has suspended its global operations till Monday.

Hundreds of Jet Airways pilots gathered outside the airlines' headquarter at Siroya Centre in Mumbai today demanding their unpaid salaries.

Earlier in the day, the Guild, which has around 1,100 pilots as its members, made a decision to stop flying from April 15 in protest against non-payment of salaries since March.

At least 2 killed in aircraft collision in Nepal’s Lukla airport
Seven people, including the country's tourism minister, were killed in February when a helicopter crashed in the hilly east. But the airport has been dubbed one of the world's most unsafe because of the short runway and hard approach.

The airline has also cancelled its long-haul, west-bound operations to and from Amsterdam, London and Paris till April 16, Jet Airways said on Sunday.

The airline's pilots along with engineers and senior staff were last paid for December, 2018. Earlier, the Indian government was said to be looking into options to save jobs at Jet Airways, including by asking other airlines such as low-priced operator SpiceJet Ltd.to consider taking over some aircraft, according to people familiar with the matter.

".the airline's management and its key stakeholders, including its consortium of lenders, continue to work closely towards resolving the current situation", a Jet spokesperson said in a statement.

Goyal quit as chairman of the carrier last month under a debt resolution plan that saw lenders taking control of the airline.

Jet Airways successfully managed to hold its own as a full-service airline in the tough Indian market after first breaking into the monopoly held by state-run Air India in the early 1990s, according to Bloomberg. This apart, the airline has also defaulted on the March salary of other categories of employees as well.

The NAG said the members requested that the strike be put off in view of the "critical meeting" planned on Monday with the airline management and the State Bank of India (SBI).
