Fordham University student falls climbing campus bell tower to take photos

Fordham’s school president Joseph Mc Shane confirmed the tragic news in a letter to students

It is reportedly common for students at the university to climb the Keating Hall clock tower, touch the bell and take photos of the NY city skyline from outside one of its windows before they graduate.

Police say a Fordham University student was seriously injured after falling Sunday morning 140 feet from the school's iconic bell tower, according to multiple published reports.

Ms Monfries was taken to hospital in a serious condition and failed to recover. "Our hearts go out to Sydney's parents, her family and friends - theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief".

The journalism student and her friends had just had dinner at a barbecue restaurant and chose to climb the tower as a "rite of passage" before graduating next month, according to staff there.

The university is now investigating how the students gained access to the tower.

The incident remains under investigation.

Access to the tower is restricted, a university spokeswoman told the Times.

Oil prices up with OPEC cuts, supply risks
In 2018 OPEC+ made a decision to increase output at its mid-year meeting, only to return to production cuts in 2019. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were up as much as 1.4 percent at $64.45 per barrel.

The senior continued, "I think they were posting on Instagram when it happened".

According to United States media reports, Ms Monfries slipped on her way up the tower's spiral staircase and was found by emergency services at about 3.17am. Police said the group of seniors wanted to get a view of the city skyline, WABC reported. However, according to the Post, the president of Fordham confirmed her death.

"There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise - and mere weeks from graduation", Mr McShane wrote in his letter.

"I know you join me in keeping Sydney, and her family and loved ones, in your thoughts and prayers", Father McShane also said, reported the New York Times.

Monfries fell inside the tower (shown) through a gap in the landing.

"It's like a senior thing to go on the most popular building on campus", said Priscilla Morales, a psychology student, told the Times. I'll never forget all of our memories back when you lived in NJ and I'll forever cherish them!
