Giant Stratolaunch aircraft lands initial flight

Stratolaunch a giant six-engine aircraft with the world’s longest wingspan, makes its historic first flight from the Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave Calif. Saturday

Stratolaunch, a 500,000-pound plane with a 385-foot wingspan that is built to send rockets into orbit around the Earth, lifted off shortly after 10AM ET from Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California.

"What a fantastic first flight", Stratolaunch Chief Executive Officer Jean Floyd said in a statement posted to the company's website. The flight lasted for about two and a half hours, in which it reached an altitude of 17,000 ft (5182 m) and a maximum speed of 189 mp/h (304 km/h), according to Stratolaunch Systems.

The world's largest plane flew for the first time on Saturday. Until now, it had just carried out tests on the ground.

Built by Stratolaunch Systems Corporation, the company founded by Paul G Allen, late Microsoft co-founder, Stratolaunch has a dual fuselage design. "It definitely was ready to fly and wanted to fly and climbed out quickly". Rockets with orbital payloads will be mounted to the center wing of the aircraft, which will then be flown to an altitude of around 35,000 feet. Mr Allen died in October 2018.

If successful, such a project would be a cheaper way to launch objects into space than rockets fired from the ground.

Past tests included the initial rollout and an engine test in 2017, and later taxis down the runway in Mojave at various speeds.

Britain was due to leave the European Union on March 29, but has twice had to ask the bloc's other 27 leaders for an extension. The officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the closed-door negotiations.

Powered by the same type of engines used by Boeing 747s, the aircraft is created to take off at a maximum weight of 1.3 million pounds.

Its twin fuselages are 238 feet long, and the aircraft is so big, it has two cockpits - one in each fuselage - although only one is used to fly the plane.

The previous world wingspan record holder was Howard Hughes' World War II-era eight-engine H-4 Hercules flying boat - nicknamed the Spruce Goose.

While Stratolaunch calls its aircraft the world's largest, other airplanes exceed it in length from nose to tail.

Its wings stretch about 97.5-meters and can still be seen today at an aviation museum in Oregon.

The airplane's six Pratt & Whitney engines and 28-wheel landing gear were originally designed for Boeing 747s, but aerospace company Scaled Composites worked alongside Stratolaunch and repurposed three 747s to put it together.
