Pompeo addressed the Venezuelan people directly in a video tweet, saying the U.S.is eager to provide them desperately needed humanitarian assistance, including food and medicine.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the diplomats will continue their "mission from other locations", and said that the situation is only temporary.

Pompeo added that the United States government "remains firm in its resolve and support for the people of Venezuela and interim President Juan Guaido".

"We look forward to resuming our presence once the transition to democracy begins".

All American diplomats have left Venezuela, says Pompeo

The American flag flying outside the U.S. Embassy in the Venezuelan capital is lowered as the last remaining diplomats leave the country. State Department spokesman Robert Palladino told reporters that the USA has revoked more than 600 visas from Venezuelans since late a year ago. Palladino urged any USA citizens left in Venezuela to leave.

Large crowds have gathered in the northern Venezuelan city of Valencia to greet opposition leader Juan Guaido, who plans to tour the country as part of his campaign to oust President Nicolas Maduro.

The country began returning to normal on Thursday following a near-total weeklong blackout that the government has blamed on what it calls sabotage encouraged by the US.

He said it was part of an ongoing strategy to impose visa restrictions "on corrupt individuals who enable Maduro's theft of Venezuela's assets for their own personal gain".
