Hamas forces attack protesters against high cost of living, taxes in Gaza

IDF strikes over 100 Hamas targets after terrorists fire 11 rockets into Israel

Israeli airstrikes hit 100 Hamas targets throughout Gaza Thursday night in retaliation to two rockets fired earlier at central Israel from the Palestinian-controlled area along the country's western coast, the Israel Defense Forces said.

Overnight, Israeli aircraft and helicopters strike dozens of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip.

It said targets included an office complex allegedly used by Hamas to coordinate militant operations in the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli military says it has begun attacking sites in the Gaza Strip in response to a rocket attack on Tel Aviv.

Both Hamas and Islamic Jihad, for their part, have denied any responsibility for the alleged rocket attack, with the latter group issuing a statement holding Israel responsible for the latest escalation.

Witnesses said powerful explosions from the air strikes rocked buildings in Gaza and lit the skies over targeted sites.

"We hold Hamas responsible for all attacks launched from the territory under its control, and urge the global community to publicly recognize that this offensive came unprovoked and that Israel has the full right to do whatever is required to safeguard the security of its residents and citizens", Singer said.

Israeli media are citing an Israeli defence official as saying that the rockets may have been launched "by mistake" while maintenance work was being carried out. The military said several rockets were intercepted by its air defense systems, and there were no reports of injuries.

Two rockets struck Tel Aviv late on Thursday, taking Israel's military by surprise.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu conferred with senior army officials to discuss a response.

Israel normally holds Hamas responsible for any violence emanating from Gaza, regardless of which group perpetrated the attack.

Hamas denied involvement, saying the launches took place as its leaders met Egyptian delegates about efforts to secure a long-term ceasefire with Israel.

The attacks come as the April 9 election nears and security has been a hot topic as tensions between the two warring sides have been ratcheting up with the most recent incident occurring last Saturday when a ballistic was launched from Gaza at Israel. No Israelis were injured in the attacks.

But Israel's military said they were launched by Hamas. The Iran-backed Al-Sabareen terrorist group in Gaza has yet to release an official statement following the rocket attacks.

More than 2,100 Palestinians were killed in Gaza during that war, majority civilians, along with 66 Israeli soldiers and seven civilians in Israel.

"I suggest to Hamas, don't count on it", he told his Cabinet.
