Australia Bans Ex-Breitbart Writer Milo Yiannopoulos After Mosque Attack Hate Dig

Milo Yiannopoulos

Milo Yiannopoulos has been banned from entering Australia for a tour following his comments regarding the Christchurch terror attack.

In a statement published by Australia's immigration minister, David Coleman, the government said it would not allow UK-born Yiannopoulos to visit Australia for a tour this year. But the former Breitbart journalist posted on Facebook Friday that attacks like the one in Christchurch happen "because the establishment panders to and mollycoddles extremist leftism and barbaric alien religious cultures". However, the government agreed last week to approve the visa after conservative MPs put pressure on Coleman to override the ruling.

The ultra-right public speaker, a British national, who lives in the United States, was scheduled to tour Australia later this year to speak at a series of events. "The terrorist attack in Christchurch was carried out on Muslims peacefully practicing their religion".

A letter sent to Yiannopoulos by Australia's Department of Home Affairs earlier this year noted the Migration Act gave it the power to refuse a visa application in the event the person would "incite discord in the Australian community or in a segment of that community". "It was an act of pure evil".

Speaker banned from Aust after terror attack comments

He also defended extreme American right-wing commentator Candace Owens, whom a suspected gunman in the attack named as an inspiration.

"I explicitly denounced violence", he said.

Mr Yiannopoulostook to social media after the announcement on Saturday, where he said: "I'm banned from Australia, again, after a statement in which I said I abhor political violence". His hate speeches had led to Twitter banning him from its platform in 2016.

"Surely the Liberal government is not going to issue a visa to someone so he can conduct a tour to promote hatred against Muslims", said Australian Labor Party representative Tony Burke.

Imran Khan, Pakistan's prime minister, also expressed his condolences and said he was alarmed by the further rise of Islamophobia. A fourth person was apprehended but later released after it was determined to be an armed bystander trying to help authorities.
