At least 24 dead, dozens missing in Zimbabwe after cyclone

Mozambique cyclone kills dozens, cuts power to SA

At least 24 people have been killed and dozens are missing in parts of eastern Zimbabwe after the country was hit by tropical cyclone Idai which lashed neighbouring Mozambique and Malawi, the government said.

Joshua Sacco, an MP in Zimbabwe's Chimanimani district, told the French news agency AFP that most of the fatalities were from Chimanimani East.

"At least 25 houses were swept away following a mudslide at Ngangu township in Chimanimani urban". There were people inside.

The United Nations said more than 100 people had already died in weeks of heavy rain and flooding in Mozambique and Malawi.

Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change spokesman Jacob Mafume tweeted that there is a "serious humanitarian crisis" unfolding in eastern Zimbabwe districts. "We need state intervention on a massive scale to avoid biblical disaster", he said.

Many were injured, while property and major infrastructure such as bridges were destroyed mostly in Chipinge and Chimanimani, Manicaland Province.

Zimbabwe's military is trying to rescue the 197 students at the school although unsafe conditions are forcing the soldiers to use ground efforts rather than attempt an air rescue, the government's ministry of information said later.

The storm, the worst to hit Mozambique in at least a decade, had windspeeds of more than 200 kilometers per hour before it made landfall early Friday.

Destruction in Mozambique

Heavy rains in neighbouring Malawi have affected nearly a million people and claimed 56 lives, according to the latest government toll.

"We have compatriots suffering without hope and we have to restore hope", he said on Friday as he set off on a three-day state visit to the kingdom previously known as Swaziland. This was revealed by Acting President Retired General Constantino Chiwenga when he sent a message of condolences to the affected families following the cyclone disaster that has so far claimed 31 lives and left over 100 unaccounted for. Roads were flooded and the airport was shut down.

When the cyclone hit Mozambique, authorities there were forced to close the worldwide airport in the port city of Beira after the air traffic control tower, the navigation systems and the runways were damaged by the storm.

An official at the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) told AFP earlier that "houses and trees were destroyed and pylons downed".

"The runway is full of obstacles and parked aircraft are damaged".

The storm damaged a Mozambican transmission line to South Africa, cutting supplies by 900 MW and worsening an electricity shortage in SA.

South Africa's power utility company Eskom on Saturday introduced electricity rationing "due to the loss of additional capacity, which includes a reduction in imports from Mozambique", it said in a statement.
