Alleged Gambino crime boss shot, killed outside Staten Island home

Frank Cali thought to have headed the Gambino crime family since 2015 was shot and killed in Staten Island

Cali was named head of the family in summer 2013, DNA Info reported at the time, taking over total control of the more than 750-person organization. Cali was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. His head was by his SUV, and the truck was open'.

U.S. media reported that Cali's death marked the first murder of a NY mob boss in 34 years, since the death of Paul Castellano - another Gambino family boss - by order of the infamous John Gotti, also known as Teflon Don.

Cali reportedly took over the Gambino crime family in 2015, according to a profile in Gang Land News.

Gotti then ran the Gambino family until he was convicted in 1992 of racketeering and five counts of murder.

The New York Daily News reported in 2015 that cali had been made acting boss of the Gambino crime family: "Frank Cali, 49, of Staten Island, who has served on the family's ruling panel for several years, has been elevated to acting boss, replacing 68-year-old Domenico Cefalu, the website Ganglandnews.com reported Thursday".

Later that year, he pleaded guilty to extortion conspiracy related to the planned construction of a NASCAR speedway on Staten Island - a plan that eventually was scrapped. He died in prison in 2002.

Nadal WD's before Federer clash with knee injury
The world number two received treatment to the knee during his gruelling quarter-final win over Russia's Karen Khachanov on Friday.

The post-Gotti chapter saw the mob's influence on the United States eastern seaboard wane - but Wednesday's hit threw NY back to its golden years of organized crime.

The murder of reputed Gambino crime family boss Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali Wednesday night was the first big mob hit in New York City since Paul Castellano was killed outside a steakhouse in 1985.

"We thought those days were over", Mayor Bill de Blasio said of Cali's slaying. He was sentenced to 16 months in federal prison and released in 2009. He was shot on a tree-lined street in one of New York City's less-glamorous outer boroughs, a short walk from ball fields, a country club and a day camp.

Last October, 71-year-old Sylvester Zottola, a reputed associate of the Bonanno organisation, was shot dead at a takeaway restaurant in the Bronx, New York.

A witness said that his family members rushed outside after Cali was gunned down.
