US youth plan Washington rally to protest climate inaction

Schoolchildren in Cambridge have set up an eco-council to work together to learn about, and find solutions to, the climate and ecological crisis.

"It's totally unfair considering they have been representing (voters) with the expectations they will do what's in the best interests of the country", she said.

They are expecting a much bigger turnout this Friday for Ottawa's Global Student Climate Strike - one of hundreds of rallies around the world for teenagers interested in fighting climate change.

The girls are following the lead of Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swede who has been skipping Friday classes for the last year, opting instead to protest climate change in front of the Swedish parliament buildings.

Thousands of youths marched in Wellington carrying placards reading "Time's Melting Away" and "Act Now or Swim" as part of an ambitious plan to stage 1,000 demonstrations in more than 100 countries during a worldwide day of action.

In an example of protest cross-pollination, Thunberg says she was inspired by the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who organized the March for Our Lives, which drew around 2 million people in March 2018.

Some schools may take a harder stance on activism-related absences, but if they do that would be at the discretion of the school's principal, said district spokesman Harry Esteve.

This is a rapidly growing global movement that flowed from Greta's individual decision on 20 August previous year to take Friday off school to sit on the ground outside the Swedish Parliament Building in Stockholm demanding change.

Students briefly stopped traffic at a pedestrian crossing chanting "System change, not climate change" and "Climate, change it back", before marching through a shopping centre.

The kids are again proving they give a shit.
