TVDSB welcomes proposed cellphone ban in Ontario classrooms

Ontario to ban cellphones from classrooms

The Canadian Press is reporting that the Ontario government will announce this week that it plans to introduce legislation banning cellphones in classrooms, starting in the next school year.

It's not clear exactly how the directive would look, but the government will leave it up to school boards in how they enforce a ban in their schools.

Education consultation surveys from past year suggested that approximately 97 percent of respondents supported some form of restriction on phones in class, according to the government sources.

The ban is set to begin in the upcoming school year. Join the conversation by commenting below!

"It's making sure to create a culture where we know where the boundaries area".

Canada's most populous province will ban mobile phones in classrooms next year.

"What I think is problematic is when people use their phones to text their friends either within the classroom or outside the classroom-and would not be condoned for use [by] the teacher".

Rep. Khanna: Too Soon to Decide on Trump Impeachment
The feisty politician simply said, " I'm not for impeachment ", when asked about her stance regarding the issue. No, I don't think he's fit to be president of the United States", Pelosi said.

"Obviously for emergency purposes, for medical purposes and for specific courses that require technological platforms - they'd be permissible", Progressive Conservative MPP Stephen Lecce told CTV News Toronto.

Harvey Bischof, president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation, said it doesn't sound like the policy will differ from what is already happening in schools.

About 97 per cent of respondents favoured some sort of restriction on phones in class, the sources said.

The Green Party of Ontario issued a statement calling the ban "bumper sticker" politics and accused the Doug Ford government of trying to turn public attention away from the controversy around its handling of the autism services file.

"Students need to be discerning digital citizens and opportunities should be provided within the curriculum to allow students to safely explore various uses and risks of technology in an intentionally guided and supportive environment", the association wrote.

It would prohibit cellphone use during instructional time.

Among the feedback sent to the ministry of education, educators complained that phones were not only a distraction but that students were also using them to cheat and share unflattering photographs of teachers on social media. The improvements were largely seen among the students who were normally the lowest achieving.
