Senate Demands Trump End US Support for War in Yemen

The Republican-controlled Senate has passed a resolution that would end u.s. involvement in the Saudi-led coalition's brutal war in Yemen, countering President Donald Trump's support for the controversial conflict. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT)-recently signed a separate pledge to "end the forever war".

Seven Republicans broke with Trump to support the resolution, which was co-sponsored by Sens.

For supporters of the measure, the vote was not just about taking a moral stand on Saudi Arabia's human rights record, but also about asserting Congress's constitutional privilege to declare war.

"Congressional authority over war was created to avoid the type of situation that's been unfolding in Yemen, where unauthorized US military support began without public debate or scrutiny", Martin said. The Democratic Senators were joined by six Republican Senators. The resolution requires the president to withdraw any U-S troops in or affecting Yemen within 30 days.

"We have been providing the bombs that the Saudi-led coalition is using, we have been refueling their planes before they drop those bombs, and we have been assisting with intelligence", Sanders said.

Opponents argued that the War Powers Resolution does not apply because the U.S.is not directly involved in combat in Yemen. "The Saudi-led war in Yemen has caused 85,000 children to starve to death".

If the resolution passes both chambers of Congress, it would mark the first time that Congress has successfully invoked the War Powers Resolution to end USA engagement in a conflict.

Former Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to join Chicago Bears
Clinton-Dix, a first-round pick of the Packers in 2014, was traded to the Washington Redskins at the trade deadline last season. Over four and a half seasons with the Packers, Clinton-Dix tallied 390 tackles, 14 interceptions and 5.5 sacks.

"We should not be associated with a bombing campaign that the United Nations tells us is likely a gross violation of human rights", Senator Chris Murphy said on the Senate floor.

"Most of the advocacy around this war in the USA has focused on what we want the U.S.to stop doing - refuelling, selling arms, blocking Security Council actions, etc. ..." Mike Lee of Utah, the vote passed in a final count of 54-46.

Doubling down on the position that the executive branch, despite what the US Constitution clearly says, has unilateral war-making powers, a new statement was issued by President Trump's Office of Management and Budget (OMB) objecting to the Senate's vote on a challenge to the Yemen War.

The measure will now go to the House of Representatives, where it is expected to be passed before it goes to Trump.

U.S. forces previously provided targeting support for coalition airstrikes and even mid-air refueling for coalition planes, until that practice was reportedly discontinued late a year ago.

Murphy said that after the Senate voted for a similar resolution previous year, the warring parties in Yemen moved towards a cease fire.
