Right-wing senator blames Muslims for terror attack at New Zealand mosque

What New Zealand the U.S. Norway and Canada Have in Common After the Christchurch Attack

At least 49 people were killed at two mosques full of worshipers attending Friday prayers in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Young children are among the 48 people wounded in the attack and are being treated for gunshot wounds. The attacker has not been named, but Australia's prime minister said he was an Australian citizen and described him as an "extremist right-wing violent terrorist".

Three men and one woman are in custody.

"I can tell you one thing right now: our gun laws will change", said Ardern.

He said he wanted to "take revenge" for Europeans lost to terror attacks in Europe, and it appears that he was most outraged by the death of Ebba Akerlund, a Stockholm schoolgirl who was one of the four people killed by a Muslim asylum-seeker who drove a hijacked lorry into a crowd in April 2017.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has described this as one of the country's "darkest days", while around the world political and religious leaders have expressed their condemnation of the attack.

On Twitter, Ranstorp noted that the New Zealand shooter claimed he would leave prison after 27 years and likened himself to late South African President Nelson Mandela, saying he would get the Nobel Peace Prize.

Australian Senator Faser Anning released a statement blaming "the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place" as "the real cause of bloodshed" following Friday's shootings.

A 28-year old man has been charged with murder.

Investigators were said to be trying to establish whether or not the other two people arrested were involved in the attacks.

That number has grown consistently throughout the years, with New Zealand reporting only 1.3 million such firms in 2016, 1.2 million in 2009 and less than a million in 2005.
