Ranked Osaka shocked by Bencic in Indian Wells 4th round

Naomi Osaka of Japan is congratulated by Danielle Collins after their match during the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden

The 21-year-old added that she could see a change in herself since her Indian Wells victory last year sparked a stellar 2018 campaign that included a win over Serena Williams in the US Open final.

The Swiss has not lost since January, while Osaka will remain number one after the tournament following Halep's elimination.

When asked in her on-court interview whether she is feeling more relaxed on the court, Osaka said has enjoyed playing tennis for a while now and is grateful for the opportunity to be back at the Premier Mandatory event in the Southern Californian desert. "She is an incredible player". The 22-year-old Bencic was the teenager star who won the position of number seven in a world but unfortunately her career was stalled after back and wrist injuries.

Halep's loss ensured Osaka will retain her number one ranking after the tournament. She won everything in the past couple of months.

"Yeah, I think it should be good". "So just things worked out for me", said Bencic. "Yeah, I did well for my first time". But it just happens, one of those days.

Top seed Naomi Osaka was blitzed by Belinda Bencic, while Simona Halep went down to Marketa Vondrousova in the last 16.

"I just got unlucky, got a virus somewhere and that's how it is". "But it's everything I could do today".

Japan's Osaka was trying to defend a title for the first time in her career. Vondrousova, who beat 2018 runner-up Daria Kasatkina and former French Open victor Jelena Ostapenko on the way to the fourth round, will go for another big win when she faces sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina, who battled to a 7-6 (10/8), 5-7, 6-4 victory over Australian Ashleigh Barty. Venus Williams reached the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mona Barthel.

Spain's Muguruza, a two-time Grand Slam champion now ranked 20th in the world, out-lasted seventh-ranked Kiki Bertens 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 while Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam victor, beat Germany's Mona Barthel 6-4, 6-4. No. 8 Angelique Kerber outlasted qualifier Natalia Vikhlyantseva 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 and No. 9 Aryna Sabalenka defeated 24th-seeded Lesia Tsurenko 6-2, 7-5.

"It gives me confidence that I can turn around matches, that I can play also three sets, also in the close moments that I'm there, that I can trust myself", said Kerber, adding that it was always hard to face an opponent for the first time.
