Mass shootings at New Zealand mosques, narrow escape for Bangladesh cricket team

Mass shootings at Christchurch mosques

"We have asked the team to stay confined in the hotel", Bangladesh Cricket Board spokesman Jalal Yunus told AFP.

"I saw them get out of the parking lot, within five minutes one of the players [Iqbal] called me for help - he said save us, we are in big trouble someone is shooting." said Isam.

When the bus carrying some players and coaching staff arrived at the mosque, they heard but did not see the shootings, Mohammad Isam, a journalist traveling with the Bangladesh team, told The Associated Press.

Multiple fatalities were inflicted at two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch on Friday when at least one gunman opened fire on worshippers forcing the city into lockdown as police launched a massive manhunt.

"They told me that five people died over there in that mosque, and I have seen with my own eyes, three people dead on the street", he said.

Members of the Bangladeshi team were en route to pray at the Masjid Al Noor Mosque ahead of a scheduled Test match against hosts New Zealand, according to Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star.

The team first fled to the dressing room at the Hagley Oval, before returning safely to their hotel.

He said there could have been "more than hundreds" of shots that were fired from what he heard.

The team's cricketer Tamim Iqbal Khan wrote: "Entire team got saved from active shooters".

The Bangladesh Cricket team, who were visiting the city, escaped the attack.

Bangladesh team were "50 yards" from one of the mosques targeted by the attacker who also broadcast live footage on Facebook of the massacre, officials say.

A second shooting at Linwood mosque on Aldwins Rd was reported about half an hour later.

Ardern described the event as "extreme and unprecedented violence".

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden termed the shooting as "one of New Zealand's darkest days". The mosque is near the cricket stadium and the players had gone for their Friday players.

"There were bodies all over me", he said.

"This goes to the seriousness of the situation", Bush said, adding that the police were not assuming the situation was limited to Christchurch at this stage. "About ten minutes later they ran out of the bus and ran through Hagley Park and into the Hagley Oval".

"Many of those who would have been affected by this shooting may be migrants to New Zealand", Ardern said.

New Zealand police say they are hunting "an active shooter".

White said he had spoken with the liaison officer with the Bangladesh team and the players were "shocked".
