A gunman opened fire on Friday prayers at a mosque in New Zealand killing many worshippers and forcing the city of Christchurch into lockdown as police launched a massive manhunt.

One man who said he was at the Al Noor mosque told media the gunman was white, blond and wearing a helmet and a bulletproof vest. The extent of the other three suspects' involvement has yet to be determined. Bush said it would be "improper" to confirm the identity of the person charged at this point.

Bush said he would not at this time "be discussing the offenders' possible motivations or the causes of this incident". Police also said a number of improvised explosive devices were discovered on vehicles in the immediate area. He said one was slightly injured.

The Christchurch Hospital said earlier that 48 people had suffered gunshot wounds. "From what we know, it does appear to have been well planned".

"We believe that 40 people have lost their lives in this act of extreme violence", Ardern said. And those values will not and cannot be shaken by this attack.

Bush confirmed the shootings had resulted in "multiple fatalities".

There has been shootings at two mosques in the city of Christchurch in New Zealand.

Ardern said at a Friday afternoon news conference, "what has happened here is an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence". They are us. The perpetrator is not.

"New Zealand Police alerted us to a video on Facebook shortly after the livestream commenced and we quickly removed both the shooter's Facebook and Instagram accounts and the video", a Facebook spokeswoman told CNN. The terror attack had been live-streamed on Facebook and uploaded onto social media sites where it was widely shared before being taken down.

"The two other people that have been apprehended, again in possession of firearms in the general environment, we are working through to understand what their involvement is", he said.
