Chiefs release safety Eric Berry, save $9.5 million on the salary cap

Chiefs Release Veteran S Eric Berry After Nine Seasons

The release of Berry, 30, brings an end to the Kansas City career of one of the team's most respected leaders of the past decade.

That doesn't mean they can't still improve at safety and another big name just became available as the Kansas City Chiefs released Eric Berry on Wednesday. "He will always be an important part of our Chiefs family, and we wish him nothing but the best in the future".

The Chiefs agreed to a $42 million, three-year deal with former Texans safety Tyrann Mathieu before the start of free agency, and it turned out to be a signal that Berry's time in Kansas City was over.

In his nine-year National Football League career, Berry has played in 89 games (87 starts).

The Chiefs sacked longtime coordinator Bob Sutton and replaced him with Steve Spagnuolo shortly after their defense wrapped up a miserable season with a complete letdown against the Patriots in the AFC championship game.

The Chiefs are expected to move away from Sutton's 3-4 scheme in favor of a new 4-3 base system under new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Aurora Cannabis names Trian's Nelson Peltz as adviser, shares rise
Peltz has an established track record of acquiring companies through Trian Fund Management-his investment management firm. Equities research analysts predict that Aurora Cannabis will post -0.17 earnings per share for the current fiscal year.

If Berry can return healthy to the field, he will be a nice addition for any team in need of strong leadership and dynamic play in the secondary.

The Atlanta native also amassed 77 tackles with a forced fumble a returned a two-point conversion interception for the game-winning points in a homecoming game against the Falcons.

Berry sustained a torn Achilles tendon in 2017 after one game.

In Berry's next season, a trend of health-related problems started for the All-Pro safety.

Berry was able to overcome cancer and was even named the 2015 Comeback Player of the Year.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Chiefs cut Berry before $7.25 million of his 2019 salary became fully guaranteed on Friday.
