Facebook under new criminal investigation for its data-sharing deals

Facebook is under criminal investigation for its data sharing practices

The companies are just two of more than 150 tech firms that entered data-sharing deals with Facebook, which allowed the company sweeping access to hundreds of millions of Facebook users' personal information, including private Facebook messages. Facebook has said the partnerships were well-publicized at the time, and that it has since shut a lot of them down.

Manufacturers of mobile devices got an especially sweet deal, according to internal Facebook documents seen by the Times.

In addition to looking at the data deals, the probes focus on disclosures that the company shared the user data of 87 million people with Cambridge Analytica, a British consulting firm that worked with U.S. President Donald Trump's campaign.

Despite these assurances, the partnerships are now the subject of a federal investigation.

The newspaper says a grand jury in NY has subpoenaed information from at least two companies known for making smartphones and other devices, citing two unnamed people familiar with the request. Facebook did not respond to questions about the focus or nature of the investigation. The company told The Times that it's cooperating with investigators. Facebook is also facing a record-setting multibillion-dollar fine from the FTC for privacy violations, according to The Washington Post.

The social media giant acknowledged the report in a tweet, saying that it is already facing federal investigations.

"We've provided public testimony, answered questions, and pledged that we will continue to do so", Facebook said in a statement. Investigations by the Federal Trade Commission, the justice department and the Securities and Exchange Commission have all been previously reported.
