Amid turmoil, Facebook chief product officer quits

Facebook's chief product officer and head of Whatsapp are leaving

Zuckerberg said he has no plans to replace Cox, though Daniels will be replaced by Will Cathcart, another longtime Facebook veteran. Less than a year ago, he was put in charge of all of Facebook's apps, including its flagship social media site as well as Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.

On Thursday, the company announced that Chief Product Officer Chris Cox and Chris Daniels, who heads Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp, are leaving.

Zuckerberg recently announced that Facebook would emphasize user privacy more via encrypted messaging, a significant directional shift from the company's long-time goal of openness and connectedness.

Cox worked on some of Facebook's key products, including the social network's News Feed, and led the product and design teams. It's a huge job for Zuckerberg and all the leaders of Facebook's apps, so it's not going to be an easy job for anyone involved.

Zuckerberg phrased that more delicately, noting that "We both realized we had too much important work to do to improve our products for society".

He is also a full Brazil worldwide and made his debut against El Salvador in September 2018. He has been named the best defender in the league for the last five months in a row.

Daniels took over the leadership of WhatsApp previous year after the founders of the service, Jan Koum and Brian Acton, left Facebook, citing directional disagreements with Zuckerberg.

Cox and Daniels are among a string of executives who've left Facebook since 2017. Cox didn't offer any explanation for his departure.

These two departures come on the heels of founding-executive departures at Facebook-owned Instagram and WhatsApp previous year.

"At this point, we have made real progress on many issues and we have a clear plan for our apps, centered around making private messaging, stories and groups the foundation of the experience, including enabling encryption and interoperability across our services", Zuckerberg continued.

"It's a product vision attuned to the subject matter of today: a modern communications platform that balances expression, safety, security and privacy", Cox wrote in a Facebook post. In a memo to employees, Zuckerberg suggested the events were linked.
