Police say detective killed by friendly fire

Simonsen, a 19-year NYPD veteran, was put in a squad auto and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officers at first did not see anyone inside through the window of the store.

O'Neill said the officers saw the suspect emerging from the back, pointing at them what appeared to be a handgun.

The situation unfolded when Simonsen and Gorman, dressed in plain clothes, were working another case nearby when a 911 call came in around 6:09 p.m., Maloney said.

A 19-year veteran of the New York Police Department was fatally shot during an attempted robbery Tuesday in what authorities said was an incident of friendly fire.

"Tonight highlights the incredibly fearless actions NYPD members perform each day in the name of fighting crime and keeping people safe in every neighborhood".

Simonsen and Gorman entered the store and were confronted by a suspect wielding what appeared to be a gun, Commissioner James O'Neill said at a press conference Tuesday night.

"This appears to be an absolute tragic case of friendly fire", said O'Neill, who added that the assessment is subject to change pending an investigation. He was shot multiple times.

Police have identified the suspect as 27-year-old Christopher Ramson.

Borussia Dortmund's flight to London delayed because Jadon Sancho forgot passport
One admirer on Twitter said Sancho had "produced a career highlight reel in one game" with an outrageous display of silky skills and assists.

"It was like 10 or 12 consecutive sounds, you know, pop, pop, pop, pop, and immediately after that we could hear the sirens going off", Richmond Hill resident Manny Singh said.

The detective, identified as Brian Simonsen of the of the 102nd Precinct's detective squad, was apparently hit by so-called friendly fire when several officers opened fire on an armed suspect, according to Commissioner James O'Neill.

One of the callers reported seeing the suspect take two employees at gunpoint to the back of the store, O'Neil said.

The detectives were responding to a call about a robbery at a cellphone store in Queens, the police said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and O'Neill met with Gorman at the hospital. The detective sergeant, shot in the leg, was in serious but stable condition. The Detective Endowment Association says that act shows just what type of man he was. "He didn't have to be at work tonight", Palladino said. That's my best friend.

The owner of the store closed for an hour Wednesday morning to say prayers for the fallen officer and for his partner. "That bravery and resolve is something we all need to understand".

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has directed flags on all state government buildings to fly at half staff in honor of Simonsen. "On behalf of all New Yorkers, I offer my deepest sympathies to Detective Simonsen's loved ones and fellow members of the NYPD".

Brian Simonsen is the first NY police officer to die in the line of duty since July 2017.

Officers responded and fired multiple rounds, during which Simonsen was hit, the commissioner informed.
