Good News For UK Racing

Racing at Ludlow has been suspended

Racing in Britain had been canceled for the past six days as a result of an equine influenza outbreak.

All British racing was put on hold last Thursday after the flu outbreak, which affected horses at Donald McCain's yard.

The news means fixtures will take place over jumps tomorrow at Musselburgh and Plumpton, and on the Flat at Kempton and Southwell, while there will also be Irish racing at Fairyhouse. "This risk has been assessed and, based on the evidence - and ensuring biosecurity measures are in place - the level of risk is viewed as acceptable".

Analysis is ongoing at the AHT, in line with a prioritisation plan based on the potential exposure of horses to a horse who has tested positive (for example at the fixture at Ayr on 6 Feb), or to a horse from a yard returning a positive test.

Speaking on Tuesday's edition of After The Last, the Racing Post scribe said participant sentiment toward the sport's governing body remained mixed despite the BHA announcing a risk-managed return to racing will take place from Wednesday nearly a week after racing was halted.

The BHA will then review the declarations to ensure none are entered which do not meet risk criteria.

"The ability of runners to return to racing from those yards will depend on the risk categories the yards are placed in". The statement read, "We are finalising overnight which category individual trainers will now be placed in". The BHA will be in further contact with Newmarket trainers tomorrow morning.

No racing has taken place in Britain since last Thursday, with the news sending shock waves through the turf fraternity in The Sport of Kings.

Horse Racing was halted last week due to an outbreak of equine flu, but after recent tests up and down the country, the BHA's Chief Regulatory Officer, Brant Dunshea, confirmed that racing could return.

"As long as they can fulfil that requirement, they are fine".

The Newmarket community - including licensed trainers, veterinary surgeries, farriers, the British Racing School and all other relevant bodies - are being advised by the BHA to continue to show increased vigilance in biosecurity.

Media reports have estimated that the overall costs to racing will be in the region between £150m to £200m, with racing fixtures such as the Super Saturday at Newbury expected to cost bookmakers up to £2m a day. There is no obvious connection between Sajanjl and the four identified horses.

"All horses at Kremlin House Stables, totalling 92 boxes, undergo a strict vaccination check and programme on their arrival", the statement added.
