Ford recalls 1.5 million pickups over faulty transmissions

Ford F-150s

Ford Motor Company announced a triple shot of recalls Wednesday morning that address problems in approximately 1.5 million Ford F-150s, Mustangs, Lincoln Continentals, Lincoln Nautilus and Lincoln Navigators.

Ford is alerting owners of trucks made between 2011 and 2013 with six-speed automatic transmission shift issues of the potential issue. The trucks have a transmission issue that "may experience an intermittent loss of the transmission output speed sensor signal to the powertrain control module", which could cause the truck to shift into first gear.

Ford has five reports of accidents including one that caused a whiplash injury from a sudden downshift.

Ford's F-Series pickup is the top-selling vehicle in the US. Certain vehicles may have an intermittently functioning door latch motor due to the buildup of silicon contamination; as a result, the door latch may not fully engage. So far, Ford says it has not heard of any accidents or injuries from this defect. The recall affects more than 28,000 vehicles in North America.

Along with the recall on the F-150, Ford also announced a safety recall for select 2017-19 Lincoln Continental vehicles for door latches that may not engage. Dealers will replace the door latch assemblies in all four doors.

Ford said it knew of no accidents related to either of the latter two recalls.

The Lincoln Continental recall focuses on door latches that may not properly engage, while the Mustang, Nautilus and Navigator are being brought in for service to reprogram the instrument cluster software.

This action affects approximately 4,200 vehicles in the United States and federalized territories and approximately 150 in Canada. The company says the "instrument panel cluster assemblies"-digital dashboards-in those cars could be blank when the vehicle is started". The recall reference number is 19C03.
