Almost two weeks after "Empire" star Jussie Smollett claimed he was the victim of a racist, homophobic attack, cops have yet to identify any suspects - and some people in his tony Chicago neighborhood are growing skeptical.
On Monday night, Fox 32 Chicago anchor Rafer Weigel reported that police "received cell phone records today from Smollett's camp".
Since the January 29 incident, Chicago police have not been able to identify any legitimate suspects in the case or find any surveillance video capturing the attack on film. "Jussie has voluntarily provided his phone records from within an hour of the attack and given multiple statements to police".
This totally contradicts the one neighbor who says that she saw a suspicious individual around the building where she and Smollett reside about 90 minutes before the alleged attack.
"Despite my frustrations and deep concern with certain inaccuracies and misrepresentations that have been spread, I still believe that justice will be served", he said in his first statement following the alleged attack. They released video of two people in the area at the time who they said were persons of interest. He also said in an earlier statement that he'd been "100% factual and consistent on every level" when working with police.
A spokesman said the records he sent "are not sufficient and do not meet the burden of a criminal investigation".
On Jan. 9, while walking to a subway, two men reportedly yelled racial and homophobic slurs at the actor after he exited the restaurant, investigators told The Hollywood Reporter.
Lottery victor claims jackpot wearing ‘Scream’ mask to hide identity
The person arrived at the lotto centre wearing the mask from the 1996 horror flick, along with a pair of black rubber gloves. She noted: "People have been coming with their own disguises". "I found out [I won] the same night", he said.
"I've been in this neighborhood five years".
"I don't believe it happened the way he said it did".
Rob Elgas of WLS-TV in Chicago reported that "when Smollett contacted police at 2:42AM, he was still wearing the rope around his neck".
Meanwhile, the New York Post reports that an empty hot sauce bottle filled with a clear liquid was found near the scene of the reported attack, and that it smelled like bleach. "They have cameras everywhere".
"[Chicago Police Superintendent] Eddie Johnson says [Jussie Smollett] is still being treated as the victim in this case but if the investigation does reveal he made a false report he will be held accountable", he tweeted.
Chicago police have not been able to identify any legitimate suspects in the case, nor have they been able to find any surveillance footage of the attack.
