England great Gordon Banks dies

England World Cup winner Gordon Banks has died aged 81

The veteran broadcaster slipped up during a news report about footballing great Gordon Banks' passing.

However, the former England stopper could have carried on for longer if not for a auto crash in 1972, forcing him to give up the game he loved.

Peter Shilton, who followed Banks as England number one, tweeted: "I'm devastated - today Ive lost my hero our condolences to his family rip Gordon".

Banks played every game in the 1966 World Cup including the 4-2 victory over West Germany in the final at Wembley - the only time England has won the world title.

While his slender frame meant he was not the most imposing of goalkeepers, Banks's movement and agility saw him command his area.

As well as starring for Leicester City and Stoke City, Banks earned 73 caps for his country and was England's starting goalkeeper as they won the World Cup on home soil in 1966.

But the man responsible for it - former England, Leicester and Stoke goalkeeper Gordon Banks who has died at the age of 81 - was typically modest and self-deprecating when recalling how he defied Pele, and seemingly gravity itself, during an iconic World Cup moment.

"I was proud to call him a teammate".

Liverpool's improvement is clear to see, says Wijnaldum
I am of a blue persuasion when it comes to Merseyside football and so firstly I must stress how grateful I am for Manchester City. I think that's how it will have to be for Liverpool . "Manchester City have set themselves a standard in the last week".

"It is with great sadness that we announce that Gordon passed away peacefully overnight", the statement was quoted, as saying by BBC Football.

Banks famously denied a Pele header in a 1970 World Cup fixture between England and Brazil, leaping to his right to somehow deflect the goal-bound effort over the bar and rather than this would prove to be the spark which would ignite a decades-long friendship between the two.

"It was particularly special to be with him at a Football Writers" tribute dinner a year ago and wish him well on his 80th birthday.

England and Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling tweeted: "Of course there was THAT save, but it's so much more we are mourning today".

Football's global governing body FIFA sent its condolences.

England captain and World Cup Golden Boot victor Harry Kane tweeted: 'Very sad to hear the news of Gordon Banks passing away. "One of the very greatest", he wrote on Twitter. Thinking especially of Ursula, Julia, Wendy and Robert.

"When we had training sessions (in Mexico), I noticed that when the ball was dropping in front of me, it was kicking up, not staying low like it did in England", Banks said in an interview on the Football Writers' Association website in January 2018. "Will be very sadly missed".
