Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar announces run for president

Race for the White House: Midwestern senator throws her hat in the ring

Some Republicans say Klobuchar is able to get things done because she pushes smaller issues.

She added, "I think taking on Amy Klobuchar, attacking her for standing in the middle of a snowfall in her home state, eh, might not be the hill he wants to die on, might not be the smartest line of attack for Trump".

Klobuchar will follow her event in Minnesota with a trip to Iowa and Wisconsin next weekend and then another trip to Iowa on February 21.

This means nearly nothing in terms of the Minnesota senator's presidential prospects - she must first navigate the brutal months-long nomination process against a large field of flame-throwing liberals with greater appeal to the base of the Democratic Party, and if given the choice between Klobuchar and Trump, rural voters might just choose Trump again - but Klobuchar's persona of a low-key, pragmatic politician resonates. Senator Amy Klobuchar is the latest Democrat to enter the race. According to FiveThirtyEight's congressional vote tracker, Klobuchar voted with Trump's interests 31% of the time since he took office.

Among the other Midwestern lawmakers who could also seek the nomination are Senator Sherrod Brown of OH, who has been visiting early-voting states, and Pete Buttigieg, the Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who established an exploratory committee last month.

A talented orator with a flair for the dramatic, he drew attention for his performance during confirmation hearings of Trump Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. "Bad timing. By the end of her speech, she looked like a Snowman (woman)", Trump tweeted on Sunday. "That's ordinary people doing extraordinary things", she said in her prepared remarks.

"It would be cool to have a woman president from Minnesota", said Cyrus Brave Heart, who turns 18 in March and is excited to vote in the next presidential election. "I am running for you".

Trump administration unveils order to prioritize and promote AI
The White House says President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order Monday promoting artificial intelligence. Follow the White House OSTP on Twitter for more updates on the Trump administration's "American AI Initiative".

The announcement came days after national media outlets published stories casting Klobuchar as a boss who was overly tough on staff members who shared their stories anonymously.

"Our nation must be governed not from chaos but from opportunity", Klobuchar said. Trump often overlooks evidence of record global warming and conflates cold spells and other incidents of weather with climate, which is long-term. Other senators, including Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and the 2016 runner-up to the nomination, Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., are considering bids.

"If you just go in your opposite corner of the boxing ring, you never get anything done", she said on ABC's "The View" late a year ago. She's also the top Democrat on the Senate Rules Committee, a post that had her working with Republican Chair Roy Blunt of Missouri in 2018 on legislation improving how sexual harassment complaints against lawmakers are handled.

Klobuchar was born and raised in Minnesota.

But her bipartisan approach may not stand her in such good stead in a party now dominated by the progressive left.

Before she was a senator, she was the Hennepin County Attorney for eight years. "I don't feel like she's the kind of person that's going to get people super excited at a rally".

Her status as a neighbor to the first state to cast ballots in 2020 may be beneficial, as Klobuchar clearly suggested in her speech Sunday.
