Delhi: Massive fire breaks out in hotel, 9 die

The fire-fighting operation carried by more than 100 personnel of Delhi's fire department lasted around four hours. Gautam Buddh Nagar district magistrate BN Singh had said more than 60 people were inside the hospital when the incident occurred.

In the wake of the deadly incident, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has ordered the cancellation of today evening's celebrations in connection with the completion of four years of the Aam Aadmi government.

"Our fire station is just nearby and we reached the hotel within six minutes".

Indian Twitter user Vikas Tripathi, sharing the video, wrote: "Death toll likely to rise as people jumped off the building to save themselves".

It was not immediately clear how many guests and staff were inside the hotel, which had 43 guest rooms, according to its website.

Jain said hotel guests tried to flee through the hotel's narrow corridors, panelled in wood.

A fire accident in a hotel at Delhi's Karol Bagh area has consumed 17 lives.

Fires are common across India because of poor safety standards and lax enforcement of regulations. He added that at least two people jumped out of the building.

"I called the manager the second time and asked him to hurry as we had a sick child with us", said Shrestha, "After some time another fire truck with hydraulic system came".

Many structures, both old and new, lack proper fire exits.

"As per information gathered from the site, it reveals that the incidence of fire accrued at second floor at around 3.30am on February 12 due to short-circuit", the official said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was "deeply saddened" by the loss of life in a statement posted on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the fire has been doused and bodies of the people are being taken out now from the hospital.
