Canada's Opposition leader slams Justin Trudeau over resignation of former AG

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer holds a press conference on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Friday

Earlier: Trudeau said he welcomes inquiry into SNC-Lavalin.

Veterans Affairs Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould quit on Tuesday amid news reports that she was pressured to go easy on a major firm past year when she was justice minister, a development that deepened a political crisis for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just months ahead of an election.

I look forward to continuing to serve as the Member of Parliament for Vancouver-Granville.

In a brief statement, Cameron Ahmad, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Trudeau, said Wilson-Raybould tendered her resignation when she and Trudeau spoke last night.

Her exit came less than 24 hours after Trudeau said he had "full confidence" in her and suggested she would have resigned from cabinet on principle if she had felt anyone had tried to improperly pressure her.

Make no mistake about it - there are serious allegations to be answered about how Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government dealt with the legal problems of Quebec mega-company SNC-Lavalin.

The Prime Minister has also announced that Minister Harjit Sajjan has replaced Jody Wilson-Raybould as the acting Minister of Veterans Affairs.

Federal Veterans Affairs Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould announced Tuesday morning that she is resigning from cabinet.

Wilson-Raybould, 47, appointed justice minister when Trudeau's Liberals came to power in November 2015, is one of the most prominent aboriginal politicians in federal politics.

Gatland expects improved showing in record-breaking attempt vs England
We've got a chance, we're at home, the stadium will be full and it'll be some atmosphere at the Principality Stadium. I don't think it ever looked like we were going to lose the game, but we weren't as accurate as we could have been.

"We urge Mr. Trudeau's team to stop trying to discredit Ms. Wilson-Raybould and to commit to fully cooperate with the Ethic Commissioner's investigation".

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau is being investigated for illegally attempting to shield engineering firm SNC-Lavalin from criminal fraud and corruption charges involving millions of dollars in bribes to the Libyan government.

The resignation is the second blow for Trudeau in two days over the affair.

The Tories and New Democrats want nine high-ranking officials - including members of Trudeau's inner circle and the new justice minister, David Lametti - to testify before the committee.

Wilson-Raybould will also step down from her role as associate minister of national defence.

Some Indigenous leaders have been highly critical of Trudeau's decision to demote Wilson-Raybould and those criticisms escalated Tuesday.

Garrison Settee, grand chief of the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc., a group representing 30 First Nations in northern Manitoba, echoed that sentiment.

He said he's "concerned about the many unanswered questions" surrounding Wilson-Raybould's resignation and added that this is "echoed by many First Nations across the country".
