Prison Nurse Fatally Poisoned Husband to Marry Convicted Murderer

After pleading guilty to second-degree murder, Claypool was sentenced to life in prison, but would become eligible for parole after serving 25 years.

Amy Murray, 40, is facing charges including first-degree murder and arson in the December 11 death of her husband, Joshua Murray.

Fire marshals investigating the incident found the blaze began in the home's master bedroom, and the person who started the fire used an accelerant to set the home ablaze, according to the Miller County Sheriff's Office.

An autopsy showed Joshua was dead before the fire started and found he had been poisoned with antifreeze.

Court records say a Missouri jail nurse who wanted to marry the convicted killer of $1.7 million lottery victor poisoned her husband before setting fire to the couple's home.

Police say Murray was a nurse at a correctional center and was having a relationship with an inmate. The charges stem from a fire at her Iberia, Missouri, home that the Missouri State Fire Marshall and Miller County Sheriff's Office determined she allegedly started.

In recorded phone calls at the facility, Murray told Claypool she wanted to divorce her husband.

Claypool was arrested in 2000 and has been behind bars for more than 18 years in the fatal stabbing of a 72 -year-old man who won $1.7million in the lottery. Amy Murray had taken her 11-year-old son and the family dogs to McDonald's at the time of the fire and then allegedly claimed the smoke was too heavy for her to go inside the house once she returned, according to a probable cause statement obtained by ABC News.

Murray was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with her husband's death, authorities said.

According to the documents, in recorded phone conversations Murray told the inmate, Eugene Claypool, 40, she didn't want to be married to her husband anymore and she could marry Claypool because her husband was dead and "out of the picture", Fox 22 reported.

They also spoke of getting Claypool an attorney so he could be released from prison early. During Wednesday's hearing, a judge will rule on the defense's motion to reduce her bond.
