Google is letting users watch full free, ad-supported movies on YouTube

This marks the first time that YouTube has offered free streaming films in exchange for users watching ads.

YouTube has created a formal collection of Hollywood movies-including some heavy-hitters like The Terminator and the Rocky series-for free viewing. At the moment, the list of free movies is relatively small - around 100 or so - but YouTube says that the catalog will be expanding over time. Users can watch these films at no cost with commercial interruptions and pop-up banner ads like the ones displayed on other YouTube videos.

As AdAge reports, YouTube made a decision to introduce free, ad-supported movie streams because it's what users want, with Rohit Dhawan, director of product management at YouTube, stating "We saw this opportunity based on user demand, beyond just offering paid movies".

Check Out John Williams' New Score For Disney's Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge
The park is now set to open in two phases over 2019: in the summer in Disneyland, and in the fall in Disney World. And here is a new video showing footage from Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run Coming to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge .

YouTube did not give the details of the deals with studios and advertisers. However the standout titles are Legally Blonde, Legally Blonde 2, The Terminator and Rocky.

The new free streaming facility also "presents a nice opportunity for advertisers", Dhawan said. The latest stats reveal that we've already reached a point where 20 percent of YouTube is watched via a smart TV and it's growing.

It may not yet rival ad-supported streaming competitors like Hulu yet, but according to Dhawan, the company does plan to expand its selection of free feature films.
