Riyadh admits Khashoggi died in Istanbul mission as world powers demand answers

Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank President Bostic speaks with Reuters in Stanford

This announcement by a spokesman for the governing party in Turkey follows Saudi Arabia's admission that Khashoggi was killed inside its consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

The Amnesty International human rights organization called for a "neutral and independent" UN-led investigation into the killing of Khashoggi, while the Reporters Without Borders (Reporters Sans Frontiers, or RSF) non-governmental organization said it had expected "a determined, constant and powerful pressure to be kept on Saudi Arabia in order to get the whole truth on the case".

The Saudi authorities admitted on Friday that Khashoggi was dead.

The overnight announcements in Saudi state media came more than two weeks after Khashoggi, 59, entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul for paperwork required to marry his Turkish fiancée, and never came out.

"The mornings were the worst for him because he would wake up to the equivalent of sustained gunfire online", Khashoggi's longtime friend Maggie Mitchell Salem told the Times. Until Friday, it had denied knowledge of his whereabouts and insisted he had left the building alive.

Bin Salman says his kingdom's authorities are in talks with the Turkish government to determine what happen. Trump had initially said it was credible.

President Trump praised the kingdom for acting quickly and said the official explanation was "credible", despite many USA lawmakers expressing disbelief over the Saudi account.

Officials say they have audio evidence to support this claim, as of yet no body parts have been found.

Migrant Caravan's Arduous Journey Through Central America Toward U.S
Mexico's peso weakened more than 1.5 percent against the dollar on Thursday, partly driven by Trump's comments, analysts said. President Donald Trump on Thursday morning accused Democrats of orchestrating an illegal immigrant "assault on our country".

He also described Prince Mohammed as "an old-fashioned tribal leader" out of touch with Saudi's poor.

October 9: Turkey says it will search the consulate. The Saudi team arrives in Istanbul a day later.

In public, Erdogan and top government figures have remained extremely cautious, often referring to a prosecutors' investigation and stopping short of pinning the blame on Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia's statement in the early hours of Saturday morning came after more than two weeks of worldwide pressure to explain Mr Khashoggi's disappearance and came after President Trump dispatched his secretary of state, Mike Pompeo to Riyadh to discuss the case.

October 15: A Saudi-owned satellite news channel says the 15-member team referred to by Turkish media as Khashoggi's "hit squad" were "tourists" visiting Turkey.

Mr Trump dispatched Mr Pompeo to Saudi Arabia and Turkey earlier in the week to speak to officials about the case.

Turkish investigators, who have been combing a forest and other sites outside Istanbul, are likely to find out what happened to his body "before long", a senior Turkish official told Reuters on Saturday. The state of the body when found could make it hard to ascertain whether the Saudi account of the killing was accurate.

The statements said Khashoggi's body had been disposed of by a "local collaborator", 18 men had been arrested in connection with the "cover-up", and two senior officials - close confidantes of Bin Salman - had been sacked. A Saudi foreign ministry official says the kingdom is investigating the "regrettable and painful incident of Jamal Khashoggi's death" and forming a committee to hold those responsible accountable.
