Purdue shocks second-ranked Ohio State, 49-20

This is why the Big 12 isn't done yet.

Ohio State, however, enters this game undefeated in the season thus far.

It's why the 13 members of the College Football Playoff selection committee don't release their first ranking until October 30, because the story is just beginning to unfold, and one upset can cause a ripple effect throughout the entire cast of contenders.

The Ohio State Buckeyes had few answers on the field during Saturday's 49-20 humiliation at Purdue. Purdue is 5-3 in its past eight home games against the Buckeyes.

In spite of their blemishes, though, both Ohio State and MI are still very much in contention to finish in the top four and have the strength of schedule to do it, just not together. Behind a high-powered offense and an aggressive defense, some of the sport's boldest prognosticators thought Jeff Brohm's Boilermakers had what it took to slay the perceived best team in the Big Ten.

Ohio State had a chance to match Purdue's 98-yard drive when it drove from its 2 to the Purdue 16.

Intu confirms takeover bid tabled valuing business at around £2.85bn
Intu is behind major shopping destinations such as Manchester's Trafford Centre and the Metrocetre in Gateshead, among others. This is an 18 per cent premium to Intu's closing share price of 177.7p last night.

Now? It boils down to one or the other on November 24 - assuming, of course, neither stumbles again before then.

The bye week comes at a good time for the defending Big Ten champs, which still have road games at Michigan State and Maryland before their annual clash with Michigan on November 24.

No. 6 Michigan 21, No. 24 Michigan State 7: Shea Patterson threw two touchdown passes and the Wolverines earned a desperately needed victory in East Lansing, Mich., snapping a streak of 17 consecutive losses to ranked teams on the road.

Ohio State could not run the ball at all on Saturday night. Last year, it was Iowa. It was the second straight year the Big Ten champion was left out of the top four and a reminder there's no guarantee in a system as subjective as the playoff.

It is still too early to go insane over the College Football Playoff implications for Ohio State with this loss, because a one-loss Big Ten champion - be it Ohio State or MI - would still figure to have a solid chance of being one of the four teams selected at the end of the year. It couldn't stop Purdue's offense as QB David Blough threw for 378 yards and star freshman Rondale Moore was once again a major factor. He said he is honored to play a powerhouse team and "see how we stack up" against them. The game not only potentially throws the Big Ten East in the direction of archrival MI but blows a hole into the idea that Ohio State is a College Football Playoff-caliber team. Purdue will look to continue flexing against the Big Ten East Division next week when they travel to East Lansing to take on a beat-up Michigan State team. It's of little consolation, but the game was already out of hand at that point.

Mistake-prone Ohio State (7-1, 4-1) had its 12-game winning streak snapped, fell out of the Big Ten East lead behind rival MI and now must fight away its way back into playoff position.
