Madrid Are Now Suffering Their Longest Goal Drought In History

The German has suggested he is not enjoying his current role

Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui stressed the last thing he was thinking about was whether his job was under threat after his side were beaten 2-1 at home by Levante, their third successive defeat in all competitions.

Real's last goal in any competition came in a 1-0 win against Espanyol on September 22 and they have failed to score in their following games with Sevilla, Atletico Madrid, CSKA Moscow and Alaves.

The Brazilian full-back's goal ended a run of 482 minutes without a goal, although it could not prevent them from losing. Articles appear on euronews.com for a limited time.

While away on worldwide duty with Germany national team, the midfielder suggested he did not want to do the dirty work Lopetegui required of him, saying, "I like playing deeper, but I'm not Casemiro".

Lopetegui, only three months into his stint with Real Madrid, defended himself against the critics.

The royal couple, who occasionally clasped hands and posed with a surfboard, are on their first global tour since marrying in May. Prince Harry told competitors that Meghan is "resting back at home" during his morning event.

The VAR stepped in a few minutes later when a nervous Varane touched the ball with his hand and the referee initially awarded Levante a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. He has a really good relationship with us.

Levante were two up in 13 minutes and both came from Varane mistakes. The hosts also had an apparent goal nullified after video review and another ruled offside. Not before the 56th minute had passed, however, and Madrid's drought became their longest ever.

Oier, who conceded nine goals playing for Granada at the Bernabeu in 2015, pushed a Casemiro header on to the bar, blocked Lucas Vasquez's point-blank shot with his foot and pushed away Gareth Bale's free-kick. Finally, Madrid scored, with that pair involved again as Bale flicked to Benzema at the back post.

Their offensive troubles have led to increased speculation that they are ready to launch a huge bid for a world-renowned player next summer, with Paris Saint-Germain ace Neymar and Chelsea's Eden Hazard two of the targets that they are most readily associated with.

Meanwhile, Alaves found themselves atop the Spanish league table on Friday after their 1-0 win over Celta Vigo hoisted them ahead of Sevilla and Barcelona in the top three.
