Julian Assange to take legal action against Ecuador

LONDON ENGLAND- FEBRUARY 05 Wikileaks founder Julian Assange prepares to speak from the balcony of the Ecuadorian embassy where he continues to seek asylum following an extradition request from Sweden in 2012

Assange has been living in Ecuador's embassy in London since 2012 when Swedish prosecutors filed rape charges against him.

Julian Assange is to launch legal action against the government of Ecuador, accusing it of violating his "fundamental rights and freedoms".

But now - six months after Assange's internet access was cut off - WikiLeaks lawyer Baltasar Garzon says Assange's rights are being violated, and he's suing. It is due to be heard in a domestic court next week.

The whistleblowing website says Assange's access to the outside world has been "summarily cut off", and that Quito has threatened to remove the protection granted to him since being given political asylum. The hearing of the case is expected to take place next week.

It said Ecuador's government had refused to allow a visit by Human Rights Watch's general counsel Dinah PoKempner and stopped several meetings with Assange's lawyers.

The protocol, according to Wikileaks, also states that the Ecuadorian Embassy can seize the property of Assange and his visitors and hand it over to British authorities without a warrant.

The co-founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, has been living in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London since 2012 out of fear that he would be arrested by United Kingdom authorities for a violation of bail terms and deported to the US. "The embassy has the right to protect its offices, the officials who work there, and even Mr. Assange himself", he wrote.

Julian Assange greets supporters outside the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

However, earlier this week it said it would be partially restored.

Baltazar says there are no plans to take assange to Russian Federation, despite recent reports that Moscow tried to help him escape to years ago.

Mr Assange's guests will also have to be previously approved by the embassy, and their private details, including social media usernames and serial numbers of phones and tablets, be revealed to the embassy.

Earlier this week, USA congressmen wrote an open letter to President Moreno stated that in order to advance "crucial matters. from economic cooperation to counternarcotics assistance to the possible return of a USAID mission to Ecuador, we must first resolve a significant challenge created by your predecessor, Rafael Correa - the status of Julian Assange".
