Julian Assange to take legal action against Ecuador

Speculation is mounting that Ecuador is preparing to end its standoff with the British government by terminating Wikileaks founder Julian Assange's high-profile stay at its embassy

Assange has been living in Ecuador's embassy in London since 2012 when Swedish prosecutors filed rape charges against him.

Julian Assange is to launch legal action against the government of Ecuador, accusing it of violating his "fundamental rights and freedoms".

But now - six months after Assange's internet access was cut off - WikiLeaks lawyer Baltasar Garzon says Assange's rights are being violated, and he's suing. It is due to be heard in a domestic court next week.

The whistleblowing website says Assange's access to the outside world has been "summarily cut off", and that Quito has threatened to remove the protection granted to him since being given political asylum. The hearing of the case is expected to take place next week.

It said Ecuador's government had refused to allow a visit by Human Rights Watch's general counsel Dinah PoKempner and stopped several meetings with Assange's lawyers.

The protocol, according to Wikileaks, also states that the Ecuadorian Embassy can seize the property of Assange and his visitors and hand it over to British authorities without a warrant.

Mr Assange's guests will also have to be previously approved by the embassy, and their private details, including social media usernames and serial numbers of phones and tablets, be revealed to the embassy.

Earlier this week, USA congressmen wrote an open letter to President Moreno stated that in order to advance "crucial matters. from economic cooperation to counternarcotics assistance to the possible return of a USAID mission to Ecuador, we must first resolve a significant challenge created by your predecessor, Rafael Correa - the status of Julian Assange".
