Salvini heads to Russian Federation, urges end of European Union sanctions

Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Salvini gestures during a news conference with Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte after to approve a new decree of the measures on immigration and security at Chigi Palace in Rome Italy

After Russia in 2014 annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula and started backing separatists fighting the government in eastern Ukraine, the European Union imposed economic sanctions which have been augmented and repeatedly extended since then. He said an assessment of what was most in Italian interests would be made.

"I come here because I am convinced that sanctions are economic, social and cultural madness", said Salvini, who leads the far-right League party and also serves as deputy prime minister.

Italy's Eurosceptic government is pushing for a reduction of tensions between the European Union and Russian Federation but risks isolation in Brussels as EU partners seek instead stronger measures to deter Moscow from interfering in EU affairs.

"If we are asked to confirm, we will say no".

Facebook shareholders propose removing Mark Zuckerberg as chairman
The Pennsylvania Treasury has another 38,737 to its name and the Illinois Treasury owns 190,712 shares (as of August). The proposal received 765 million votes in favor - and 5.4 billion votes against.

Kurz also revealed his plans to discuss the issue with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

The curbs on doing business with Russian banking, financial and energy sectors were renewed in June but expire at the end of January and are up for discussion in Brussels.

"Sanctions, for their own sake, only damage our companies, which we intend to protect, as well as Russia's civil society", Conte said, addressing parliament ahead of an European Union summit in Brussels on Thursday. "Of course, there is no sense in what they are", said Salvini. Italy's proposal is that the two European banks be allowed to resume funding for small, private Russian companies, apparently because they are less likely to have close ties with the Kremlin than big, state-run enterprises.
