Trump threatens to send military, shut border as migrants head for Mexico

Mexico sends federal forces to its southern border as migrant caravan heads north

President Donald Trump on Thursday dusted off the cobwebs of an old proposal from April to deploy military troops along the southern usa border in an effort to stem illegal crossings by immigrants.

"The assault on our country at our Southern Border, including the Criminal elements and DRUGS pouring in, is far more important to me, as President, than Trade or the USMCA", he tweeted, referring to a trade agreement between the US, Mexico and Canada.

He also threatened to mobilize the USA military and shut down the southern border to stop those migrants from entering the US, reports CBS News correspondent Chip Reid.

Thursday's comments were not the first time Trump has threatened to close down the southern border entirely.

While Trump did not make clear what a military deployment at the border might look like, the president did deploy nearly 4,000 National Guard troops to the border in April, as the first caravan approached.

Honduran migrants taking part in a caravan towards the United States, leave the Casa del Migrante (Migrant's House) in Guatemala City, Oct. 17, 2018. The migrants have begun arriving at the Guatemalan side of the Mexican border.

Democratic consultant Scott Ferson told the Herald he takes Trump at his word.

With the midterm elections approaching on November 6, Mr Trump attacked the "Democrat Party-led. assault on our country by Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador".

Mexico's Foreign Ministry responded with a statement on Thursday that it would ask the United Nations refugee agency for help coordinating with Central American governments related to people seeking refugee status at the country's southern border.

Those policies are all seen as initiatives of Prince Mohammed, the son of King Salman, who is next in line to the throne. Saudi officials have been in and out of the building since Khashoggi's disappearance October 2 without being stopped.

"You get in touch with the Mexican government and say that we are willing to help you with the U.S. Army across the border", Arpaio told Breitbart News in an interview. "All Democrats fault for weak laws!"

Some migrants crossed the river at a point where they could walk through shallow water Thursday, Corzo said.

Mexico's president, Enrique Peña Nieto, is also hosting emergency talks with the U.S. secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, on Friday, to assess the situation.

Marcelo Ebrard, Lopez Obrador's pick to become foreign relations secretary after he takes office, said Trump's tweets needed to be understood in the context of the upcoming USA midterm elections.

"We hope that the immigration officials and federal police have a humanitarian understanding", Corzo said.

On Saturday, just over 1,000 Hondurans left San Pedro Sula, Honduras en route to the US. In April, the president did deploy the National Guard to assist at the border, a move previously done by both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said on Wednesday his government dismissed threatened constraints placed on foreign aid.

The migrants are fleeing widespread poverty and gang violence in one of the world's most murderous countries, and many blamed Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez for what they called unlivable conditions back home.

"It was predictable and also the election process is very close, so he is making a political calculation", he added.
