Apple Watch Key in Hip Replacement Recovery Study

Zimmer Biomet is also commencing the "mymobility" clinical study, created to study the app's impact on patient outcomes and overall costs for joint replacement patients. There are more than a million hip and knee replacements performed in the USA each year, so if the trial proves successful in speeding up recovery time, the market potential could be formidable.

Apple and Zimmer Biomet are looking to enroll a substantial 10,000 people in the US for the study.

Apple has been steadily adding health features to its eponymous watch.

Zimmer is a US -based company with operations in more 25 countries. The app also delivers patient-reported data and activity information from the Apple Watch to physicians, so they can monitor a patient's progress.

The mymobility app, launched Monday by Apple and orthopedic manufacturer Zimmer Biomet, lets patients send and receive messages to and from surgeons and care teams. The Apple Watch will work with this app by gathering step and heart rate data. The objective of the study is to understand how and why some patients who underwent the surgery recovery faster than others.

Floyd Mayweather tells UFC's Khabib Nurmagomedov 'come into my world'
The Cowboys owner had UFC superstar Conor McGregor on hand for his team's 40-7 trouncing of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Nurmagomedov told Mayweather "in the jungle there is only one king" in requesting a bout.

Up to 10,000 Americans due to have hip or knee replacements will be able to funnel basic health data directly from their Apple Watches to their surgeons under a new app being tested by orthopedics company Zimmer Biomet.

The "mymobility" app has features that use both Apple Watch and iPhone through the joint replacement journey, including the ability for surgeons to send education and therapy reminders directly to the patient's Apple Watch. However, the company will make it available to everyone in the future.

The app, called mymobility, will help patients by improving their chances of having a successful surgery.

Last year, Apple also partnered with Stanford Medicine in another study to find out how Apple Watch could be utilized in detecting irregular heartbeats. Considering the aging population, more people are expected to need knee and hip replacement surgeries in the coming years.

These are just part of the iPhone maker's strategy in helping Apple Watch be recognized as a health monitoring tool. Apple also donated 1000 units of Apple Watch to the University of North Carolina to study eating disorder or binge eating.
