Antibiotic-resistant salmonella outbreak includes Kentucky — CDC

At least 92 people in 29 states have been infected with a drug-resistant strain of salmonella, and raw chicken products appear to be the culprit, the CDC said Wednesday. The bacteria have also been found in live chickens.

The CDC says this particular strain is resistant to several of the antibiotics normally used to treat the infection.

In the CDC's investigation notice, the organization said the outbreak strain of SalmonellaInfantis has caused illness in 92 people in 29 states; 21 of those people have been hospitalized due to their symptoms, and no deaths have been reported thus far.

North Carolina Assistant Commission of Agriculture for Consumer Protection Joe Reardon said the CDC has been looking into the salmonella outbreak since January and it's not concentrated in one area.

Those who have fallen ill reported eating different types and brands of chicken products purchased from many different locations, according to researchers.

To prevent cross-contamination, thoroughly wash hands, counters, cutting boards, and utensils with warm, soapy water after they touch raw chicken.

Salmonella bacteria live in chickens and other animals and raw chicken, as well as eggs, are common sources.

Additionally, the CDC does not recommend raw diets for pets, as this can make animals, as well as people handling the raw food, sick.

People get sick from Salmonella 12 to 72 hours after swallowing the germ and experience diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment other than fluids, the CDC says.
