Britain, France and Germany, which have also tended to prioritize economic ties with Riyadh, issued a joint statement saying they "expect the Saudi government to provide a complete and detailed response".

But the Saudi stock market took a major tumble Sunday, dropping as much as 7% and indicating that investors are already spooked.

Turkish officials have reportedly shared with Washington contents of video and audio recordings that allegedly contain evidence supporting claims that Khashoggi was murdered by the Saudi government.

"There's something really bad and disgusting about that, if that was the case, so we're going to have to see", Mr Trump said. He said the incident is being investigated and pledged "very powerful" consequences if Saudi Arabia is found guilty.

On Sunday, Riyadh restated its "total rejection of any threats or attempts to undermine it" through threats, sanctions, or political pressure.

Earlier on Sunday, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani denounced the media campaign against Saudi Arabia and pointed out that some media outlets "violated principles of the code of ethics in the media". "Pointing out that US President Donald Trump had expressed anger after oil reached $80 a barrel, he asked readers to imagine what it would be like if it oil jumped to "$100, or $200, or even double that figure". A medieval theocracy that still beheads by sword, doubling as a modern nation with malls (including a planned mall offering indoor skiing), Saudi Arabia has been called "an ISIS that made it".

Mr Aldakhil added that Saudi arms purchases from the United States and other trade could be at risk as well. That includes the CEO of Uber, a company in which Saudi Arabia has invested billions of dollars, as well as billionaire Richard Branson.
